When they play the system we looked pretty good. It is when teams adjust we have seemed to fall apart. Dallas strategy as the game went along was to push 2 forwards out of the D zone quickly and either bounce the puck off the board or flip it out. We responded by pushing both D back, and the gap control was gone and they had all the forecheck pressure because of it.

THe dump and chase strategy against Dallas' D wasn't really working either. They have a really mobile and strong D core that can move the puck really well. We just couldn't put any sort of pressure on them.

Ok, which 20 minutes? :sarcasm:

I prefer all of them to be honest .....

Sure, 60 sounds like it would be nice. Not sure I can remember ever seeing that, so I'm not sure.

First 10 is good, getting that first goal is supposed to be important. Last 10 and last goal also works for me, at least if Helle can hold the fort in between.
Any minutes in any 2nd period would be a change of pace.

Yeah tough to keep the pedal to the metal for 60 minutes straight. There's always gonna be an ebb and flow to every game. It's more about how you weather that ebb and flow when the momentum shifts. Even the worst teams in the league will win some games.

I don't believe that to be true.

I think you can develop your delivery and your voice range.

I bet people HATED Chris Cuthbert when he started, but he is now beloved.

Of course, there are people who will be biased against a woman doing the job - so she'll always fight that.

Keep in mind, she has only called a handful of games so far, its an art form that takes a long time to hone.

I'd already rather listen to her than Brian Munz, or most of the Sportsnet weasels.

"Of course, there are people who will be biased against a woman doing the job - so she'll always fight that", and that's absolutely true enough. Just remember to include in your equation that there are also people who will be biased in favour of a woman doing the job, so she'll always benefit from that.

As for whether she has a chance to improve? Of course anything is possible, but based on how she's responded so far, I'd think it'll be a long shot.

When you hand-wave away the 99%+ of your negative feedback that is substantive criticism of your ability, then elevate the sub-1% of it that's bog-standard internet trolls, and use that belligerent minority to cast aspersions on anyone who criticizes you?

When you suggest you receive unprecedented levels of negative feedback and vitriol that no man in sports broadcasting ever had to field, as if Pierre MacGuire doesn't exist and Howard Cosell didn't?

When you suggest that your actual skill level is merely "not the best", when it's in fact "among the worst"?

Next to the many competent women in sports broadcasting and play-by-play have performed and how they handle themselves, Leah's responses have been as distorted and off-the-mark as a funhouse mirror reflection.

... note that NONE of this, by the way, is me criticizing you or anyone else that likes her style. That is absolutely your prerogative and you certainly are a very knowledgeable hockey mind, so it's not like you're speaking like some Joe Blow just stirring up shit on the internet. But like I said closer to the start of the year, I was so much happier hearing that she was being put back in a position to succeed, as she really is an effective reporter and of course a very keen sports aficionado.

Yeah tough to keep the pedal to the metal for 60 minutes straight. There's always gonna be an ebb and flow to every game. It's more about how you weather that ebb and flow when the momentum shifts. Even the worst teams in the league will win some games.

The worst team in the league, on the road, against the best team in the league at home is almost always no worse than a 3-1 underdog. That means winning about 25% of the time. And as any gambler can tell you, this is a very very VERY big number.

Idk how much you can really shelter a top pair.

That's what I was trying to suggest, that unless both get better that's not really a first pair. Even if they were to be sheltered then what, we'd expose Dillon-Schmidt or Samberg-Demelo to those matchups instead?

Morrissey hasn't really elevated Pionk's game in the past and Pionk's game has just been lacking since we left the Canadian division.

I think I just don't like our roster of defensemen. To me there just isn't any good combination of pairs.

first look at a top-6 absence, here we go. much was made about the fwd depth if a top-6er goes down. hopefully nothing serious w/ ehlers though.
Yup, hate to lose one of our top 4 forwards!

Our bantam sized D really needs a decent puck moving D man with size but they aren’t exactly falling out of trees!

Thing would fall into place a lot better if we had a true #1. Morrissey and Pionk are both 2/3 types at best. Dillon and DeMelo are both more 4-6 types depending on the day. Stanley is a 7/8 at this point and Samberg is largely untested but I don't think he has #1 upside, probably closer to where Dillon and DeMelo are. Heinola's realistic ceiling is probably more of a 2/3 offensive type as well. We just really need to get ourselves a true #1 and the only way that's likely going to happen in through the draft.

So no Bowness. Ehlers a game time decision and Samberg in for Stanley.

I actually wouldn't mind seeing Jonsson-Fjallby get a start. Kid has some speed by all accounts, haven't seen him play yet. We are going to need speed to stick with the Avs. I think we should just start calling the kid AJF from now on. His name is a bit of a mouth full.
I'd really like to see what this Axil Fjallby can do as well. We're going to need a lot of Axil grease if we expect to beat the Avs without Ehlers in the lineup.

Or we could all just agree to call him Gorgeous.

PS, for all you Leah Hextall haters out there, I chatted with her and she's not doing any Jets pbp this season.

I think she's going to end up being a very good game caller.
Is she doing pbp this season anywhere? I heard she was in a color/interview role this year...

Ehlers took shifts after blocking that shot with his hand. Arniel said that he has a nagging lowerbody injury before last game, I assume it is related to that.

Any update yet on whether Ehlers is playing tonight?

Last I heard he was going to be a game time decision. Well, it's almost game time...
