It was probably an excuse to prolong his conditioning extension a few more games by skipping the weekend, sending to the WJC and then back to the AHL when he returns...

Ooooor am I giving them way too much credit lol

Lol they were just trying to confuse everyone

Does anyone know if he will return to the AHL when he's done with Junior Championship? Or will it be the Kings?

I think it should be NHL if he shows he’s ready, otherwise juniors. No reason to rush the kid into pros based on his shaky health

He can't go back to the AHL this year.

He'll likely get some NHL time, but they may decide to have him complete his junior season.

Is he eligible for a 10 game gig with the Kings, or is that just at the start of the season?

He is still eligible. He technically hasn't been assigned to his junior team yet (though he has been given permission to participate in the WJC).

Once he gets assigned to his junior team, he has to play out his season down there. That's why they milked his conditioning stint in the AHL: they have options.

May as well get him his 10 games if he's healthy.

Phillips is also on the roster. I don't expect Villalta or Phillips make the team. Vilardi and JAD will depend on their health.
I think Villalta got cut but Phillips actually made it, impressive for a 4th rounder

It's going to be fun watching future Kings draft pick Hughes smoke current Kings property Vilardi and Anderson-Dolan in the WJC.

Not going back to Ontario, he'll likely join the Kings for 9 games and they will make an evaluation from there whether or not he goes back to the CHL for the last couple of months. Might be the smart move as he won't have to be protected in the expansion draft if he doesn't play 11 NHL games this season.

I don't know if protection will come into play. I mean, how many guys on this roster do we actually want to keep

I would let Vilardi play his 9 games in the NHL then send him back to juniors, regardless of how he plays in the NHL. How is Vilardi's jr team doing this year? If they miss the playoffs or have an early exit they could then send Vilardi back to the AHL on ATO after his season ends there. It makes the most sense at this point. No point in burning a year off of his ELC to play half a year on a 31st placed team.

As much I'd like to see him up, at this point it's probably the best thing to do. The Kings have 39 games left after the WJC concludes. They could get him his 9 games and have him on the roster until early February. Junior season is over mid-march, and the Fronts are absolutely terrible this year. He'd have about a month before he returned to the AHL.

There is some rule about saving a player a spot on the roster (card?) for players who can be sent down. Regardless that will be well after the OHL trade deadline.
