But...you're not going to know the order of the pick until the playoffs end. And since picks 12 - 15 are lottery picks, I'm not sure this assessment makes much sense. You would have to hope that Toffoli goes to a bubble team that misses the playoffs.

As I wrote previously...I could see Toffoli going to a team like NY Islanders or Montreal that is on the bubble at the deadline that needs more offensive firepower for the wing that trades a 1st for Toffoli. He then goes on a scoring slump which the team falls in the standings and the Kings get a 12-15 pick.

But let's look at who finished 10-20 last year.
10) Philly with 82
11) Minnesota with 83
12) Chicago with 84
13) Florida with 86
14) Arizona with 86
15) Colorado with 90 *made the playoffs*
16) Vegas with 93 *made the playoffs*
17) Dallas with 93 *made the playoffs*
18) Montreal with 96 **missed the playoffs & picked 15th OA**
19) Columbus with 98 *made the playoffs*
20) St. Louis with 99 *won the Cup*

With those standings, it was an 8 point difference between 10th OA pick and the playoffs. Other than Philly and Minny those other teams were buying at the TDL which could see teams moving their 1st (see Columbus). Some team could want Toffoli for say the 16th pick at the TDL. Then maybe stumble down the season and fall to 12th OA or so.

I'm hopeful we can acquire some nice futures for guys like these but I think the values you state are way too high for the 2019 draft. If this was a poor draft, maybe. The number 12 pick in this year's draft may be as good as a top 3-5 pick most years, in terms of top-end depth.

I also don't think either of these players are worth that much as what you're saying above. I don't feel either of these players are worth more than a 2nd rounder and I actually think Martinez is worth more than Toffoli as of this moment, due to their positions...but there's lots of hockey to be played up to the deadline. I don't think there are multiple teams that own a pick in the 12 range that would be in the playoff hunt and want a Toffoli or Martinez bad enough as that's a bit of an oxymoron...it would be a team in the late teens to the 20s, pick range, a borderline contender or a true contender that would want a deal like trading futures for these players.

It may be possible to trade each of these guys for a late first/early second pick each, and then combine those picks for a mid-first.

That's the "bad" news. The good news is even if we do all that and get two lower firsts/early 2nds or we trade up, we will get top notch prospects into our system. The draft is very deep, like 2003 deep, so who knows...maybe that 2nd rounder turns into a top4/top6 player/s.

I think if Toffoli has a good year up until the TDL...he could get a mid-1st pick (12-17). I don't think Martinez can get a 1st realistically but if he does it will be a later pick like we saw with Muzzin last year (just not with the added pieces). I mean we traded 1st for Sekera, so anything can happen.

If you look at the Standings right now (granted it's the beginning of the season) there are mid pack teams that could use Toffoli to bring up their scoring. And some maybe really desperate to move a 1st for him (CGY, NYI, MTL, CBJ, WPG, TBL).

Edit: just realized this in the Vilardi thread. Sorry about that. Back to Vilardi....2 days in a row on the ice. Exciting!

I transcribed this from the State of the Franchise podcast from All The Kings Men:

Q: There was youtube video put out by someone who claimed to be somewhat of a back specialist and he was talking about a specific condition that young players have and it described to a tee what seemed to be going on with Vilardi in terms of just staying off the ice and not doing much at all. But the good news from that was that from what he was saying is the condition that he had is something that if you do give it time it’s pretty much guaranteed that they’re going to work through it. Does that sound like what Gabe has?

Rob Blake:
Yeah... uh... similar... um... listen we are hopeful that he will get back on track and be able to participate and get to a level to help us in this organization. Like I said it’s a slow process. He’s battled hard this summer. He’s progressed to a level, again, not able to get on the ice just yet. We’ll monitor that. We’ve had him in touch with specialists across the country. He’s worked with one in Ottawa near his hometown in correlation with our doctors and our back specialist here Dr. Watkins. I think they have a good handle on it. It’s a tough injury. And we’re hopeful that he can continue to progress to a level to help us one day.

The video being referred to:

I do like the kid in his football uni at the doctor's office. Hope he left his cleats at home, or he would have marked/scratched up the office floor.

Thanks RLF - killer info. Hope GV is on the road to a long, spectacular career with the Kings.

"Will have to deal with pain management in his career" sounds like a chronic condition. That's a bummer.

And how would Jon know this? Unless he knows what Vilardi is really dealing with?

Well he IS the insider... I don't think he's say that just for the **** of it.

I don't understand the secrecy around this. I live in a hockey infested market in the east and when players take a sh***it we know about it before they wipe their a***sses

something something HIPAA something something...

That's the rumor, if that's the case then Vilardi and his people decided to invoke their Hippa rights so they don't have to disclose what is wrong with him which I believe the first case ever of a pro athlete. But then again the most information we have received about Vilardi is from Bob McKenzie and a You Tuber who is in no way in the medical field whatsoever, may not have even taken a 101 class at the local JC.

I mean, if Kessel can tell the world he had one of his balls amputated... just seems a back injury is on par with a blown knee or ankle though who knows. Maybe they think it might affect his future contract negotiations or something but then again I doubt very much that the Kings DON’T know what the actual issue is so even that makes no sense.

it’ll just have to be one of the great mysteries like the formula for Coke, or how Cardi B has a career.

There is no rush, but if he is feeling ready to go soon and he is cleared, it would not shock me if he's practicing with the Reign next week. Those guys he was with on the ice today from the Reign either did not play in Bakersfield last night or are in red jersey's coming off injury (Durzi). Kupari has been fair so far with the Reign at 19 years old, but he is not yet at the level where he can consistently carry the puck into the offensive zone and drive the play. Vilardi will bring that skill, and it's something the Reign are lacking a bit right now (puck possession) as they are being outshot every game. They really miss a player like Amadio or Dowd from a few years back. Reign are home on a back to back on November 1st and 2nd, would be the ideal time (if he is cleared) to get him into the line up before a 4 game road trip to Colorado and Iowa. You could ease his minutes will his game conditioning improves. Yes, I'm jumping the gun.

It's a riddle, wrapped in a mystery, inside an enigma.

Reminds me of the burrito joint around the corner from my old house, don't really know what's in the burrito, but it tastes alright so I never complained.

Neighborhood used to have a stray cat problem though, not so much anymore.

Thats why the most legendary snitches ever have come from that coast!! :sarcasm:

It'll come out but not before the kid is back on teh ice and having played a few games... We dont need the other teams targeting his weak areas so soon... so we delay the release of any info.
