Confirmed with Link: Gabe Perreault signs ELC contract with the Rangers

I think the Caps are pretty much riding a hot year. It happens, and it's fun when it does, but it's probably not going to follow next year and you never know when you come back to earth...is it in the playoffs? Will their hot shooting hit a cold streak facing teams preparing for them and locking them down? We'll see. Despite their success whenever I've watched them I haven't been super impressed with them as some elite looking team as you say.
But...sometimes you can ride the hot play for as far as it'll take you

Agreed. I think if you asked Caps fans for a real opinion they wouldnt want to go through Shesterkin in the first round.

Also if they're smart in the summer they can use this to build a more sustainably successful team going forward, so this might be an indicator that they have a good foundation to go from, but the shoot percentages will probably go down...

Yeah McMichael and Protas have popped, and Leonard should help a lot but their best players are still on the older side. They also really dont have that coveted young 1C (unless you trust PLD to sustain this) or 1D. Their goaltending has held up well but Thompson and Brother Lindy seem like guys who could turn into pumpkins at any time.

94 is one hell of an aggressive number to wear in New York and I don’t hate it

Last time he wore that number, was for the Chicago Mission u13 team.

It's also the number his father Yanic Perreault wore in the NHL.

This year Caps seem to be a team that haven't had any hardships to overcome during regular season. IMO this is the reason why a lot of President Trophy winners (which would be teams that performed at a consistently high level throughout the whole length of the regular season - kind of by definition) struggle in the playoffs. Even when they didn't have Ovechkin they didn't struggle. Not having to face and overcome adversity is a potential issue.

Mercogliano says Perreault is practicing with Lafreniere and Miller. Also part of a second PP unit, with JT. So, looks like he is not going to be buried in the lineup (as of now).

Putting aside cynicism, I want to believe Lafreniere and Perreault make a good tandem. I imagine they could. Potentially major implications for the future make-up of the forward group.

To keep him on the Rangers roster and play him I'm pretty sure the Rangers will have to send someone to Hartford like Aube-Kubel or Parssinen or even both. I'm counting 24 on their roster page + Edstrom, Kaliyev who are both done for the season I believe and Rempe is out week to week which might mean the same thing. That leaves 23 which is the limit and Perreault's name isn't on it yet.
the 23-man roster limit is suspended after TDL
(but not the Salary Cap limit)

added:
from CBA
16.4 Active Roster Size; Playing Roster.
(a) There shall be a maximum of twenty-three (23) Players on each Club's Active Roster at any one time, provided, however, that, on the date of each season's Trade Deadline, a Club's Active Roster may be increased to any number of Players the Club, in its discretion, so determines, subject to Article 50.

Perhaps they've finally learned that you have to put young offensive forwards in position to succeed.

Pretty sure it was me. Just a heads up that I'm prone to make observations about the 80s and attribute them to you.
Hah...For some reason I was thinking that you were referring to a completely different post and this went over my head.

Regardless, I do love the 80s but still hate that Discover Card commercial ("You look rad....ya ya ya ya ya...").

With Perreault-s hockey IQ, what are the chances he gets some shifts as center? He has played all 3 forwards position and is pretty good whenever he took shifts at center ice. Kevin Hayes was a winger that moved to center. Just an idea with the lack of young center depth.

If Gabe doesn't play tonight, I'm going to be pissed. There has been so little about this season to be excited about. At least give us a little hope for next season.

I'm interested to see how he handles the speed and physicality. Whatever he lacks in terms of skating, I think he makes up for with his smarts, but the physical side will be something he will need to continue to improve on. He made strides in year 2 at BC, but the NHL is a different beast.

The benefit of him playing these games is that he gets to see what it takes to play in the NHL, and then he has the entire summer to work on his areas of weakness. If the Rangers miss the playoffs, there's a good chance he plays in the World Championships. That will be another good opportunity for him to test himself against pros.

I'm hoping he does well and makes the team out of camp next year, but if not, that's okay. Spending time in the AHL won't hurt him. If there's any question at all regarding his readiness to play in the NHL, I'd rather he play in the AHL next year. The schedule will be closer to what he is used to in college and will allow him time to practice and work on getting stronger. It would be better for him to dominate in the AHL than struggle with limited minutes on the 3rd line in the NHL.
