Confirmed with Link: Gabe Perreault signs ELC contract with the Rangers

With Perreault-s hockey IQ, what are the chances he gets some shifts as center? He has played all 3 forwards position and is pretty good whenever he took shifts at center ice. Kevin Hayes was a winger that moved to center. Just an idea with the lack of young center depth.
This season, pretty much none.

In the future? It's possible. That could be 3-4 years though. He's a very underrated defensive player(became much more of a defensive aware player this season) and has taken his fair share of draws and done decent.

Even though he didn't get a point I was very encouraged by GP's first game.

The way he froze Zucc in his skates on the pass to Laf is his bread and butter. Textbook example of how he has been able to create, seeing him do that against good NHLers right out of the gate is super exciting.

Ditto his back to back feeds to Brodzinsky on the 2nd period PP. On that shift he helped PP 2 generate more chances than it often does in entire games. The second one in particular, the way he knew exactly where to put the puck for Brodz without looking is an example of the type of eyes in the back of his head vision this kid has.

Look he's got a ways to go and unfortunately you know at some point he is going to be made an example of due to goals that go in the other way. But I hope he doesn't let fear creep into his decision making, because when he is playing fast and loose, and wanting to make an impact, it is magic.

Let me preface this by saying I'm not a guy who thinks every good winger should be moved to Center... BUT...
Watching GP's first few games, and isolating on him, he seems to play a center game, especially on the defensive side. I see him protecting the middle/netfront/slot in the Rangers' D zone pretty frequently. He certainly has the IQ to do it. Maybe if he fills out to 190-195 pounds? Which I think he should...
Be nice to get a young center from in the system...

Well if we start using draft picks to find that now, there’s a decent chance we have a borderline top 6 talent nhl ready in about a decade.

Not only that, he has a mentor in his dad to learn from. This would be a sneaky good option. Rangers switched Kevin Hayes from RW to center. I dont see an issue when they do this. I have an issue with lack of centers they move center to wing like Bryce McConnell-Barker, etc. im glad they are using Roobroeck at center in Hartford. I’d love to see Rempe and Edstrom when Edstrom is healthy to get more looks at center, with their size, it would be a good option to have.

I'm looking forward to seeing how he does in the AHL. I think some time there is the right way to go.

Time in the AHL would probably be very good for Gabe. But I also wouldn't mind if we let him suck in big minutes in the NHL.

Just don't play him as a third liner next season, for the love of all things sane.

Sorry its been crazy recently with trips and work.

Has he been playing with the Rangers?
Scratched last game. Needed to view the game from the press box and see how easy it is to miss the net on a penalty shot. I don't mind players being scratched to take a step back, reset, and work on things, but this scratch provided nothing.

He has flaws, obviously. He's not even 20 yet. He told Sam and Joe he's 175lb, and that 's probably soaking wet.

Pros
He's showed he can be smart and creative with the puck.
Not afraid to shoot or pass.
Makes quick reads with the puck and moves it quickly when he sees an open lane.
His agility and edgework helps him open space up for his teammates and draw players to him.

Cons
He needs to add more body strength. I'd say more lower body, but just more muscle overall. A long off-season is a good start for that. Probably for everybody.
His first couple of steps aren't quick enough so far for the NHL level. I know, I know, here comes the "His skating is fine", but no it's really not fine. You can see him lose coverage on stops and starts. You can see Gabe's acceleration lacking when the puck takes off and goes in the other direction.
He needs a coach that will accept him being 20 years old and right now we don't have that.

Keys for me are 19 age, 165-175 pounds, and skating is not there yet. That is why I'd rather him spend some time in the AHL where he can work on things without breaking his confidence.

Question is does it really matter re: confidence, Wolfpack vs. Rangers? Both are shitshows, he'd just play on the top line & in every situation with the Pack compared to ~13m a night with NYR. They might be better off just leaving him in the NHL unless he's severely floundering. If they decide to keep him with NYR though, they absolutely *have* to give him the freedom and leash to remain in the top 6 despite mistakes that he will make. No f***ing more of this 10m/game until you "earn it" by playing with Jake Leschkczenekzynzynzckynznsynzycn.

For some guys it does not matter but for many guys it does matter. Some guys understand and even want to play in the AHL first. McD comes to mind. He only spent around a half a season in the AHL but it was something he felt made sense. Lots of good pros started in the AHL. Just going by what I have seen in Gabe I do think he would be better off playing in the AHL until he can get a little bigger and used to some of the faster more physical pro games.

AHL is not the place to get bigger and add weight. If that was a primary concern he should have stayed in college.
