Nicolas Daws at eliteprospects.com

In 17 games this year, he's posted a 2.13 GAA and a 0.936 Save Percentage.

He's also just been named to the Junior team selection camp.

Big kid, good family, I've personally known the parents for 35 years. He really seems to be coming into his own, and deserves some recognition.

He was great in a 2-1 loss to Kitchener, where he was the only reason Guelph stayed in the game. Big kid, moves well and anticipates the play well (at least from the sample I've seen).

Could be a goalie to watch for the next draft. Will be interesting to see where he gets drafted.

Did he get passed over in the draft last year, or did he not opt in?
Someone will snag him if he goes through again.

He was playing behind Anthony Popovich last year.

I will personally guarantee he’ll be drafted in June.

He is off to the World Juniors. Has been stealing games all year for Guelph and another tonight against Saginaw. He is playing very consistent and will be drafted or outright signed by summer.

Believe he'll be a top 75 pick. A lot of scouts have been coming out to see him according to Larry Mellott aka Storm radio guy. Dman Daniil Chayka (2021) also impressing.

After being a back-up goaltender with the Guelph Storm on their way to the 2019 OHL Championship, goaltender Nico Daws was not taken in the NHL Draft. He came back with something to prove in 2019-20. Daws spent the summer getting in better shape and lost 30 pounds. He took over the starting job with the Storm, playing in 38 games. Daws went 23-8-6 with a 2.48 goals-against-average and .924 save percentage. He led the league in save percentage. Daws also played half a game for Team OHL in the Canada-Russia Super Series. In 31 minutes, Daws stopped all 13 shots he faced and led the OHL to the win. Daws translated that success into a spot with Team Canada at the World Juniors. He played two games and helped Canada to the gold medal, playing a backup role to St. Louis Blues prospect Joel Hofer.

In 2018-19, Daws played 20 games for the Storm. He put up a 10-5-2 record with a 3.25 goals-against-average and .893 save percentage. In 2017-18, Daws played 14 games with a 1-7-1 record, a 4.06 goals-against-average and .880 save percentage.

Daws was born in Munich, Germany but came to Canada at a young age, playing his minor hockey in Burlington, Ontario.

He's the one goalie - except Askarov, he'll be gone by then - I would take early (2nd round) if I was the Red Wings. The Wings have 3 2nd rounders and 2 3rd rounders and need help in the crease.

I agree, Daws is excellent both athletically and technically. He's also tough mentally, so even if he doesn't develop all of the way, fails at being a true #1 goalie, you could still end up with a really good backup. That fact makes Daws a pretty safe pick all told, and also a good one in the second-round to boot when you add the relatively high ceiling.

Ehhh not so sure about that. I think Daws will probably go in the 3rd round and about the 4th goalie off the board. Lets not forget he is a lot older than the first time eligible goalies - look where they will be in two years compared to where Daws is now. He is about a 1.5 years older than some of the 02's in the draft.

If you are drafting this kid, you should be expecting him to go straight into pro hockey. Is he good enough yet for that?

Very good point. Daws is 00’ birth year and playing against all younger players and just completed his 3rd year in The OHL. The other 02’ birth years are playing against older competition. Give the 02’ goalies 1.5 years of development and they are at the same age is daws is now. Daws had a good season but the kid is an 00’ being compared to 02’s!

I'd probably put him in the ECHL to start out, let him get used to the pace of the pro game then bring him up into the AHL. It's very rare anyways for a goalie in their DY+2, even as a late birthday to make it into the AHL. If he does make it into the AHL in his DY+2 though the odds are heavily on his side to make it into the NHL for at least one season.

I think if you are picking him in the mid rounds, you should expect him to play in the AHL next season. It’s not a big ask, even with the younger birthday for his age group. ECHL should be a minimum requirement. If he plays in ECHL/AHL will depend on the organization and their depth, but he can not be back in the OHL. You don’t pick a guy in the draft to decide to send him back for an extra season of junior hockey.

I agree sending him back to the OHL would be a waste which is why I never mentioned it as an option. Even MacKenzie Blackwood started in the ECHL before injuries forced him into the AHL. There's nothing wrong with starting Daws in either the AHL or ECHL. As a late birthday a team would have the option of starting him in the ECHL and not have it effect his development.
