G Jakub Dobes (2020, 136th, MTL)

There is a lot of belief in Jakob Fowler, but goalies are hard to predict. I wouldn't count out Dobes, especially since he is older and will most likely get his opportunity first.

Montembault has been playing quite well, but Primeau is struggling mightily. Primeau has demonstrated the ability to play at a high level at various times, but has had no consistency. I think he is nearing the end of his bosses' patience. If Fowler turns pro at the end of the year, they will want to give him a lot of icetime in the AHL, so I expect they will cut Primeau loose to make room for Dobes as the backup in the NHL.

From there, who knows if he couldn't steal the starting spot from Montembault? It's not like Monty is that well established either.

I think he eventually makes it to NHL. I really believe in him. Like his devlopmental path. I'm not sure where he fits in the Habs pipeline though.. I feel like they may have a drafted stud arriving in the near future?

Fowler is only 19 so he's not really competing with Dobes for a spot anytime soon

Fowler is 20 in 3 days, when he signs in April it will be very interesting to see what the plans are for him as i hope they don't rush him to the NHL like they did with Primeau.

Hard to say. I am more or less certain he came in as veteran depth only. His recent performances have been very impressive, so who knows if his status in the organization will change over time. At this point in time, it's still very early and I believe he is probably still seen as veteran depth.

Word is the Habs have received offers for Primeau, wouldn't be surprised to see him go once he has a bit of an upswing. So next season we'd see Montembeault and Dobes in the NHL and Hughes and Quentin Miller in the AHL. Of course it might just be Fowler and Hughes in the A and Miller in the ECHL.

Dunno. He was lights out last season in Switzerland and is kicking bottom in the AHL as we speak. He's a dark horse coming from outta nowhere basically, perhaps a latter day Christobal Huet.

Fun fact, Hughes goalie coach in Lausanne was Cristobal Huet. His previous goalie coach in Fribourg-Gotteron was another ex-Habs in David Aebischer

For myself, I can't put Volokhin ahead of Dobes until I actually see him in action. Dobes has everything you want out of a goalie. Size, athleticism, an extremely long neck...i could go on.

And he just keep improving.

You don't usually get a goalie spot for free without NHL games. NHL franchises always want organizational depth and unless you're waiver eligible with a massive track record you're never safe and one of many.

If he doesn't fall off a cliff Hughes is at least gonna get a fair shot do win an NHL gig though...be it with the Habs or elsewhere.

I can pretty much guarantee you he's not gonna resign with the Habs unless he gets NHL games this season. He should have more than enough leverage, more than enough better options to not have to do that.

I don't think many teams would actually be a better place than Montreal for that, especially if they move on from Primeau (and don't replace him with some vet goalie). Montreal has no goalie on long or pricey contract so everyone is movable.

Like I said...if the Habs wanna keep him I think they're gonna play him this season to see what they've got.

Hughes is gonna be UFA. He's gonna control his destiny and he's gonna want a clear path to the NHL at the very least. If he doesn't get it with the Habs he's gonna get it elsewhere.

...all assuming he doesn't fall off a cliff of course.
