Are there any examples of overage goaltenders going on to become starters who were also not drafted at 18? Such an interesting path he's taken and potential.

I couldn't find a list of overage drafted goalies, but the number and quality of undrafted NHL goalies surprised me... Didn't know/forgot Belfour, CuJo, and Bobrovsky weren't drafted.

Super surprising to see Sorokin. Interesting we've had modern examples of a stud goalie passed on. Guess goalies really are voodoo.

Sounds like Nabokov had a few options on the table:

1. Extend with Magnitogorsk who he's been with since he was 14 years old.
2. Accept a trade to the giant SKA and sign a new, fat deal.
3. Sign a letter of intent to join the Avalanche on an ELC at the end of this KHL season.

He chose the latter and didn't succumb to the pressure of options #1 and #2.

#2 probably would have come with term, and put his immediate NHL future in doubt.

If he comes over, even to start in the AHL, he may still be able to play for an Avalanche Cup team. Perhaps as backup or starter if he beats out Blackwood.

Wedgewood only has next year on the books, so that gives him a spot to earn. Maybe even next year if Wedge sees a drop in play, or there's injuries.

The thing I've noticed the most with him is that he will fight tooth and nail for every puck. Meaning exceptional recovery and lateral movement in net. He's always giving himself a chance at a stop no matter the play in front. All which is needed for a smaller goalie.

I love me some goalie prospects. He's got a little bit of Francouz in his game. Hoping he continues to develop well. We've seen smaller goalies like Wolf succeed. I can see a similar trajectory for Nabokov.

A low stance has very rarely worked in the NHL in the past. You have exceptions obviously but they are rare. Shooters are just too good in the NHL. I'm not as high on him as most are on these boards and that's why I have no issue including him in a trade if he can help plugging a big hole in our lineup. So IMO he would be used as a piece to upgrade at 2C or 4D. If not one of those spots then you keep him and use lesser asset(s).
