I don't know why you wouldn't take a player like this in round 3. Worst case scenario, he's a low-level NHL back up who plays some games and doesn't play that well. That'll be better than a lot of 3rd round picks who don't even play games. He's also not far from NHL ready.

Is he the most talented goalie in this draft? Probably not, but he's a top 2-3 goalie on current production. There are plenty of goalies in the NHL who are successful without being the most talented goalie.

Agreed 100%. Good pick by the oilers.

When players like this are selected is there any reason to believe they would have already expressed interest in coming to NA? For example, is the fact that Ilya Konovalov was selected mid 3rd round an indication that the Oilers likely spoke to him and had reason to believe he'd come over? Or do teams take players like this in the 3rd round even if they have absolutely no idea if they will come over? What is typical?
I doubt anybody talked to him on that issue in paticular. He is The Riser in the KHL right now. A kid who took the starter role in the KHL by storm. Absolutely not surprising he's got the attention at the NHL draft.

Has reaaaly slowed down after that 18/19 season, hopefully, he'll reinvent himself in the AHL.

Shame, I was really high on him. Oiler's just don't have luck with drafting Russians.. they always leave.lol Hoping Petrov and Samo break this trend. I still want Shlep back too!

Same thing. I had a very high regard for him in 2018/2019.

His stint in the AHL is a failure.

Rodrigue is also very disappointing but he is also 2 years younger.

On the other hand Stuart Skinner is very promising.

He is well ahead of Konovalov.

Skinner will be quite good I think.. following a similar path to Vladar and Vanecek which seems to be the typical goalie path... get drafted in rounds 3 to 7... make your way to AHL or ECHL... 'vanish' for a few years and then NHL.

Rodrigue has lots of time. I really wanted Kono to be our 1A in Bakersfield.
