Future of the team is incredibly bleak

I don' think it will be a full rebuild in 3 years based on the ages of many of our key players.

Age is one thing, whether they stay their entire career is another. One of our key cogs doesn’t have a contract beyond this year and Matthews is only signed for 3 years after this (leaving potentially 1 more 1st round to spend as others have alluded). I don’t know how desirable Canada will be to him come renewal or he will be to the Leafs if his injuries persist.

I think their fans have had a lot more enjoyment/excitement watching their team in the playoffs than we have. They haven't won the cup but they've done a lot more winning than we have and I wouldn't dismiss everything they've accomplished as "have won squat".

I've never agreed with this "win the cup or it means nothing" POV. Every game means something, especially to those buying tickets, but also guys like me who mostly watch on TV. And every playoff game means a lot more than every regular season game, for me there's nothing in sports that's as exciting as watching my team in the playoffs and the more they win, the more games we get to watch, and the more enjoyment/excitement we get. Winning the cup is the goal, but the closer you get the better.
As I mentioned …. winning a series or 3 is good for the fans and ownership. Yes playoff hockey is exciting. But for the players it means nothing. Their goal is to win the cup.
We made icons of players who won nothing and the reasoning is because we the fans enjoyed a few playoff series wins? or they fought and fans proclaimed “ they have heart”
Lanny and Sittler were each a -14 in playoffs with us. They get a pass though.

The closer you get the better ? for the fans I suppose. For the players it’s all the same. The goal is to win the cup …this isn’t horseshoes

Tavares has been ridiculously overpaid for the past SEVEN (7) years thanks to the most useless GM in hockey history.

If he takes a hometown discount of $5M per year, he’ll be a decent value as a 60 point player who’s very good at face offs and is about as low maintenance as it gets.

That would allow Treliving to spend some of the $6M in savings on a legit top 4 defenceman to bump Simon Benoit down to the minors where he belongs.

The rest of the savings can go towards getting Marner re-signed. If he was washed up like Erik Karlsson or a nutcase like Eli Pettersson, it wouldn’t make sense to re-sign Marner. But he’s unquestionably one of the top 10 to 15 forwards in the game and will be for the foreseeable future. Under no circumstances do you let that kind of talent leave for free.

Ask yourself if you’d rather have Marner and Easton Cowan for the next four years or Jesper Bratt and Kevin Fiala instead. Bet that the kind of mediocre trash free agents that teams pay $7M or $8M a year for.

??? You do get that bratt has scored at a similar rate right?

What we know
Goal
We have great cheap goaltendering for the next 3 yrs
We have a great trade option next summer to address other needs . Center

Defense
We are set for the next 3 yrs , the we have a top prospect in Danford that should be ready

Forwards
We have
Mathews Nylander Knies McMann

JT ( will be signed ) 6.5 mil* 3

Marner if he doesn't sign we will have 13 mil to sign a couple of players

Signed but tradeable
Domi Kampf Jamcrok Laughton Robertson Holmberg

Our own UFA's
Lorenz

Top prospect
Cowen

Centerman will be the priority this summer

I love Knies but he is nowhere near worth $9 million AAV

What did he smoke before saying this shit?

Comparing a player in road for a 32 goal 57 pts season playing alongside matthews and marner vs a guy who had 35 goal pace and 78 pts playing alongside frolik and backlund ( or when he resigned in florida after a 42 goal 104 pts season)

Even % of cap space when he resigned after entry level contract would be 8M with salary cap raise and he's not in the same category than Tkachuk, sorry i like him but need to stay realistic.

But honestly he could reach 7,5M, maybe 8M for a 8 year deal ( same kind of slakovsky deal)

Nothing is a big word. How do you know it means "nothing" for the players?

I’ve often wondered if thats why they don’t put in the required playoff effort. If you know can’t win, why bother trying.
Willy has been packed and ready to go to the worlds prior to some games 7.

As long as Toronto has a fashion district I think Matthews will alway consider living there.

Trade him
Leafs would immediately match. Even if 9 million is a bit rich for Knies, this kid is only 22 he’s going to be a consistent 30+ goal/70+ point player for the next 15 years. You don’t give him up for a few draft picks. Leafs wouldn’t get enough value in a trade or through an offer sheet. You immediately match or re-sign him. Knies is an old school rare power forward and Leafs are very lucky to have him. A rare 2nd round gem for this franchise.

Outside of the core 3 Knies is easily the most important piece of the future

Not sure he’s going to score 500 goals in the NHL but you don’t let him get away. That’s why they wouldn’t include him in a deal for Rantenan, basically they would be losing him and Marner for one player.

Nylander has more points than any other Leaf in game 7. This is false and flat out a ridiculous thing to say

you're right with 4 pts he's pts leader and on gm 7... butmore points doesn't mean better espeially 3 of 4 ptsgame 7 from Nylander are actually empty calorie.

a second assist for a blueline shot deflected by marleau on Pp

a second assist for losing the puck
but with chance puck bounce on Polak stick

and a goal when leafs trailing by 3 with 1 min and half remaining and game already basically over.

Gm 7 had been an issue for leafs so maybe the best thing to do is beong better first 6 and try to avoid gm 7
