Future of the team is incredibly bleak

So let's pay 16 and 91, $20+m and hope they figure it out after failing a 7th time as a group? If Mitch's game does not translate to the playoffs this year, it never will. He may also decide that the heat is too much and wants no part of this market in which case, you have to move on anyway.
To be clear, I'm perfectly okay letting Marner and Tavares walk. They've run their course here and I think there's enough evidence to support as a group they don't work when the games matter.

I just think if they do indeed leave that the Leafs are more likely to take a step back than get better and I hope people are prepared for that.

It's not bleak if we can get a good return for Matthews or Matthews actually starts playing like a 13.5M center, rather than 7M center.

Trade Matthews for Fantilli and Johnson or
Trade Matthews for Harley, Johnston

Sign Bennet, Marner
Our centre depth is thin as it stands. Moving 34 would take one big set of onions.

He did well by not trading for rentals IMO. The problem is the core which refuses to play outside their comfort zone. He has no control over that. What I fault him for is not reading the landscape. If 34 is not 100%, he should have saved his bullets for next year.
this is the year Leafs should have LTIR Matthews (until playoffs) and pick up another $13M player (in his spot) for the regular season. TB would have done this easily, I'm not sure why the Leafs are trying to make Matthews play thru injury to hobble into the playoffs? What benefit is that?

Could have easily sent the combined package used for (Laughton and Carlo):
Minten,
4th '25,
1st '26,
Grebenkin,
1st '27

to Carolina for Rantanen (signed $12M x 7) - then go into the playoffs with a healthy Matthews. Marner walks in summer..

I guess the answer would be if they made the trade with the intention of still competing, or it was the beginning of a rebuild?

McTavish, Leo Carlsson and Strome/Zegras?
Too early for the Leafs to start a rebuild. I would look to move him the last year of his contract assuming he returns to his norm. Imagine letting 16 and 34 walk for nothing and being left with 88 for 4 more years.

Carolina wanted Knies.
So swap out Minten for Knies.

Agree with all but I think you needed to include Knies. We needed to and he would have trumped Stankoven IMO.

It could be Matthews wants the Leafs record, which is probably 3 more years, so he probably walks at that point.

If marner walks this year, it really depends on July 1st.

Maybe if they fail July 1st., that then activates a trade scenario.

Does Matthews, Nylander, Knies, Tavares as a core send shivers down your spine?

If they score on July 1st. that would change everything.

Moving a 13.5M player that plays like a 7M second line center for young upcoming centers in Fantilli and Johnson or Harley and Johnston should in theory help the team win, but yeah.... it would take willingness from ownership (Matthews is highly marketable) and onions from the GM (if the deal goes south, he will forever be remembered.... not in a positive way).

Tampa moved Sergachev, McDonagh, moved on from Stamkos
Florida moved on from Montour, traded Huberdeau, Weegar

Love to get Fantilli but jury is out whether 34 remains a $7m player. If you believe so, move him before everybody else figures it out.

so IMO that is gross negligence on Treliving - but the reality is this is the "last" go for it Roster Leafs have (we're at the Apex) - and letting Knies go had to be done (to get Rantanen).

Been bleak since they let the inmates run the asylum when they canned Babcock and abandoned the plan that was working.
Babcock was a piece of of trash on how he handled the players. The one thing though is he held all of them accountable. He wasn’t afraid of benching anyone or bumping them to the 4th line. Once they let Babcock go all that accountable went out the window. The players controlled everything and continue to do that now.

They should have traded Marner before his no trade kicked in. That would have allowed for cap relief and signed some new players.

All these individual players are highly talented. Just this group as a whole has shown they cannot win. The flat cap hurt the Leafs probably the most, but they didn't do anything about it when they had the chance.

I say let Marner & Tavares walk, and just try something new with that 22M cap space.
