According to Friedman there has been an overwhelming response from NHL players that they dislike participating in the All-Star game weekend festivities and commitment. NHL teams have expressed that it is becoming increasingly harder and harder to get their players to want to go to the ASG.

The NHL met with All-Stars yesterday to try and come up with a solution on how to entice players to the event.

Friedman says that the overwhelming response is that players only want the ASG to be in hot weather/family ideal locations.

Friedman says that the NHL really took this to heart and are thinking of limiting the ASG to a circuit of a few cities, (Ala Superbowl)

Friedman mentions that the cities would be places such as , Florida, Tampa, Dallas, Arizona, Caliornia teams, Westocast.

How successful is the game anyway each year? Does it make NHL a lot o money?

It'd be dumb to just follow the players on this. Revenue-wise, it's somewhat important to get these events in places like New York, Toronto, Boston, Chicago, Philadelphia, and Montreal.
Why? You think those fans are going to stop following those teams if the All-Star game isn't held there every 10 years?

I'd wager the All-Star game isn't a revenue machine. It's a marketing event. The markets you listed don't need an all-star game to boost interest.

Has there been any analysis lately on whether the ASG actually increases fan engagement and ratings anymore?

Like I get it if it's 1993 and most people don't have cable or internet and only watch your local team's games in the market, so you may only see Gretzky, Roenick, Bure, etc. once or twice a year, then there's an appeal. But with everything streaming and highlights readily available on youtube, etc., does it really draw that much viewership that it justifies disrupting the regular schedule?

Maybe it's just something that's for the kids, and if it grows viewership there's nothing wrong with that. I remember the skills competition being the coolest thing in the world back then. But really since I was like 16, I've always felt I'd rather watch my team keep going in the regular season than to stop everything for an exhibition. If all their metrics and case studies show it's a worthwhile annual event for the growth of the game, then that's fine. I personally don't think I've watched an ASG since about 2003 though.

Its a huge revenue machine and apparently Sponsors love it!

you cancel the ASG then you better be also in favor of the CAP going way down.
