Correct me if I'm wrong, but arbitration has nothing to do with term correct?
If they come back and say he's worth 5 million dollars, we have control over term still?

Disagree. If Girardi can get a 3 million AAV deal, somebody will take Staal at close to 3. I agree that a buyout could be problematic.

That doesn't matter bc while girardi showed there is still value in that kind of player, he also showed staal that financially it's better to force the team to buy you out and get a fresh contract if you have a nmc.m.

Buying out both in the same offseason is a bit of an unneeded hamstring.

What would be the difference between this season as opposed to next?

Buyout numbers change.

Not sure what you mean. The payments are what the payments are and the cap hits are what the cap hits are. The formula isn't going to spit out a different number for buying him out next summer than what we project it would be for buying him out next summer.

I'm certainly not gung ho for the idea, but if you're planning on buying out Staal next summer, you might as well do it this summer. The payments due in years of 2-7 if you buy him out this year are almost identical as those forecasted for years 1-6 if you buy him out next.

He also loses his NMC next year so there mayyyyyy be a prayer of trading him also.

Arbitration can only be binding for 1 or 2 years. Since Zib elected arbitration (rather than the team electing it), the Rangers get to choose between 1 or 2 years, but that choice has to be made before the arbitration decision, not after.

I wouldn't worry about it though. It's rare that players actually make it to arbitration.

This is also true.

We're in a league that just handed Girardi a 3x2 contract. There is a market for Staal.

I doubt it significantly more for Staal. He fails the eye test in every way imaginable and doesn't come with the same muh grit muh blocked shots that Girardi does.

Did Girardi really have a "market" in our sense anyway? He got a lot of offers for some laughable reason but no one would bite on us trading him. Maybe it's the third year. Idk, I really see no market for Staal.

Whatever we do I hope it's a one year deal or we trade in season for an expiring contract. I want salary space with Nash's contract coming off the books to make a major pitch at Tavares. He'll be what? 27 years old next summer? 6 year 72 million
12 mill per.

I'd max out at 9-10m for Tavares

Its become an obvious fact that staal isn't going anywhere. The sacrificial lambs will have to be holden and Klein (if he doesn't retire).
As per Brook's article today the top 4 has to be Mcdonagh/Shattenkirk and Smith/Skjei.
The 5/6 will probably be staal/Deangelo?
Holden is fine as a 5/6 guy and definitely a decent 7 guy but because he isn't making much and has only one year left he is capable of being traded instead of staal (Staal should be the one being traded).
IDK maybe Staal will be somewhat competent with someone who has good wheels and skating ability like a Deangelo? Maybe grasping at straws????

Dreger said that it would take a top prospect (one whos probably played nhl games) along with a first round and then some for Matt Duchene.
Yep ok sure I'm gonna trade Skjei and a first plus some for Matt Duchene.
Great way to set this franchise back.

I would gladly trade Miller or Buchnevich, Graves or Day and a 1st for Duchene.

Not a popular opinion, but it would be the right choice.

Absolutely would not deal Buch for Duchene. Especially with Nash coming off the books after this season. Nor would I trade Miller who could produce 50-55 points for a lot less money

Duchene is overrated

Pondering that one. I just feel like they would want Skjei but maybe Miller would interest them? I doubt they would do it for Buch a first and a Graves or Day.
Rangers have been drafting pretty decently lately and i just hate to keep giving up high picks.

I wouldn't.

But I would do Hayes graves and a 2nd or something like that.

I know Hayes is a not a favorite on here. I appreciate everything he's done for this team (choosing to play for NYR and getting Vesey to sign here) but i would agree with you i would do that trade BUT unless Joe Sakic is indulging in some Fine Don Julio Tequila at the time of the trade there is no way he makes that move.

Toronto just signed hyman. They are now over the cap $3.9m but they will probably send one down to the ahl that makes $635k. Still have to sign Connor Brown, he'll be their 23 roster player. Anything over $2m for him exceeds horton's LTIR.

They have a possible $4.5m in roster bonuses that if earned, can be pushed into next season. That's kadri's cap hit for a reference. Slightly more than bozak. Using LTIR means you don't stack cap space. $1m in cap space on day 1 could be a key addition at the trade deadline. The leafs know their best shot is with their kids on elc's. They can't go for it AND max out their cap before the puck drops.

The Lupul and Horton cap hits are the biggest on the team after Marleau. All their impact players are cheap. Fehr is their only cap dump at $2m. Kadri and Bozak may end up being a tough choice. They want to add a top 4 d but they don't have the space.
