and what are we getting for taking on Callahan?
Thats the question.
It would have to be worth it.

Everyone needs more assets. The Rangers can get assets by trading their own players. Hayes is probably on the block. Spooner is probably on the block. Zuccarello probably gets moved at the deadline. Etc That's how you get assets. They still have moves to make.We need more assets.
Cap space is THE asset but if you don't use it, it's really not. If you don't like the Toronto example, Arizona did this too and got some pretty nice pieces out of it.
Again, who is Callahan going to prevent them from signing?
If they're talking to a team on his approved list, they don't need to approach his team about anything.

Callahan takes almost 6m out of the equation. I want that money available in case they need it. So the Rangers dont have to worry about creating space. The easiest thing to do is say no
Maybe? But again better to have that money available just in case.Eh. A player of $6m UFA dollar quality is someone we’re likely to develop and have cost controlled.
BTW I don't think Callahan would be moved. It would be Ryan going to the Rangers.
but even then, what assets could make that tempting?
More cap space is not a bad thing. My point is that the Rangers can acquire more assets with what they have on the roster, and not have to eat a bad contract to do. Taking a bad contract hamstrings them. Its 6m extra that they wouldnt have. That's the definition of hamstringing them. Those moves would also open up additional space.
Again, taking on Callahan doesn't hamstring them in any way shape or form.
I know it’s been said but I find it extremely hard to believe he’s waiving to go to the Rangers after his NTC just kicked in.On XM Sirius they are discussing Tyler Johnson coming back to the Rangers.

Because Ottawa would be looking to dump that salary and that'd be their only chance for their shitty ownerWhy would it be Ryan?
He isn't Tampa Bay property and they're the ones who need to clear the cap space, Not Ottawa.

Yes he would. He is around in Summer 2019, when the Rangers want to spend (at least on Panarin). Who knows what else comes available. Not the best example, but Mike Hoffman became available for nothing but a cap dump. Obviously there were (unproven) circumstances around that, but players become available out of no where. No reason to waste cap.Callahan wouldn’t still be around when your “just in case” scenario cropped up.
Carpinello already said that the Rangers have no interest in taking on Ryan’s contract. If they’re involved, it would abe a contract coming from TB.
what would TB give us to help them become a super team? A team we will have to face for 5+ years.. What would be worth it?
Upgrading a conditional 1st to a guaranteed 1st is not worth it, especially considering they would be the favorites to win the cup. What prospects would be left that don't go to OTT?

I'd think TB would trade someone with value to get draft picks/prospects back. Johnson, Palat Killorn, Miller etc.
