Because I'm bored at work. I hate wedding season.

Haha I know the feeling.

I would love to get Duchene, centers are in demand all over the league. Duchene’s stock is at an all time low. He wanted out from Colorado for a bunch of reasons surely, we don’t know what went on behind the scenes. There were a few reported incidents. He is a good guy and a solid player.

I hate Ryan’s contract though. I would need to see some retention from Ottawa to take that one. 2 mil? Then we could return again, and it could be moveable and easier to only bear our retention. It’s at 7.25 mil per right? If Ott retains 2 mil it’s at 5.25 for us. If we retain 2.25 for the remaining four years someone could get him from 31 to 35 for a cap hit of 3m per for four years. Big body, RHS, can score some. Had a good P.O. run just the last year. At 3m per he should have value for sure. Could probably get an OK return for him.

Duchene and Ryan @5.25 per for Spooner, Rykov and Vinnie L.

Swing Bobby Ryan with 2.25m retained, ie at 3m per, to say Boston or another team looking for a scoring forward for a 2nd and a 3rd or something.

Give Duchene a good role on the team and then deal him for a Nash package+ at the deadline.

Dallas would be an interesting landing spot for Karlsson. If they do it without sending Heiskanen or Klingberg that would be highway robbery. They do have Lindell who is an underrated player. They also have Point and Oettinger and I bet Ottawa would love a high end goalie in the pipeline. Hintz is an interesting prospect as well, so they're not totally devoid of the pieces to make it happen without Heiskanen or Klingberg.

They just got the Swedish goalie prospect in the Brass deal. Getting Heiskanen would make too much sense for Ottawa, especially if Bobby Ryan isn’t part of the deal.

Ah yes, the plan

1. Be bad for three years just because
2. Collect character
3. ????
4. Win cup
Could be trying to go the Toronto model and build a nucleus of cost-controlled top assets, cheap depth, and the flexibility to add a big name in the next year or two. :dunno:

I’d rather try to get the elite asset while he’s potentially available for cheaper than he’s worth.

Without sending Klingberg? Klingberg has more value than Karlsson.

Yea the thing is this is a rare year. When was the last time someone like Tavares and Karlsson were available? Rarely happens. Sometimes things happen and you have to accelerate your timeline. I wouldn't be banking on Seguin or Panarin becoming FA next year.

I legitimately don't understand your problem with the plan. They are stockpiling draft picks and young players. They just drafted a highly skilled Russian forward at 9OA. They seem to be willing to be bad again next year to have a chance at another really high end kid.

What should they be doing otherwise? Trying to make the playoffs next year?

Adjusting the plan if a player of this caliber becomes available.

Exactly. Other than getting Karlsson at your price, this is the way to go.

I want them to not only land the elite talent through the draft, but to also assemble enough depth that when they do need to add the Yandle/MSL type of players, they can do so with out really breaking a sweat.

Why do we need to count on signing a big name free agent at all?

I’d only guess Panarin, but I agree with you. I’d love to have EK65, and I posted in the July 1 thread how this rebuild has already been kickstarted since the Brassard trade.

I think bobbop or edge said it, but Karlsson becomes this team’s new window, and we’ve seen Gorton make the move with a guy like Chara. They have the cap space to make it work too.

True but I consider Point and Oettinger to be significantly better prospects than Gustavsson.

If Ottawa is adamant about Glass, then Ottawa better be Heiskanen or bust. You don’t trade a generational defenseman in their prime with any term left and not get the acquiring team’s top prospect (unless it’s a hockey deal or you’re the Montreal Canadians).
