Free Agent Frenzy/2013 Offseason Thread: Part VII: OMGZZZ SATHER DO SOMETHING

Isn't this what we all complain about?

Drury - sucked

Gomez - sucked

Redden - abomination

Gaborik - 2 good years on 5 year contract

Richards - Currently sucks

Rupp, Asham, suck(ed) to lesser degree

No top free agents. All cost more than they're worth. Limited cap space.

Yeah Sather, do something.... :shakehead

I urge everyone (myself included) to — seriously — think about this, where are we today if Sather does not make the following moves, much debated by alot of people (and no other similar moves):

1. Sign Marian Gaborik.

2. Trade AA, Dubi, Erixon and a 1st for Nash.

3. Sign Brad Richards.

Please backtrack. Answer these questions:
A) What team would we have?
B) How good would that team be?
C) What future would we have?

And so forth.

I think we would look something like this.
Hags-Step-Cally
Dubi-AA-Zucc
Kreider-Boyle-Prust
Miller-Newbury-Pyatt
Staal-Stralman
McD-Girardi
MDZ-Erixon
Hank

If you think signing Gomez was a bad idea too, just scratch McD of that team too.

I think that team is a team that is right around 8-10the in the east over the last 3 years, ie not going anywhere and not getting any high draft picks. Maybe being able to sneak into the POs once the last 3-4 years and missing it 2-3 seasons by a point or two.

Yes, we would have a good 12m in cap space, but AA and Dubi makes more combined than Nash now and with more prominant roles, people ge better stats and make more money.

How good would Stepan Callahan and co be? They would have faced a ton of pressure being forced to do everything themselves offensively. Historically, it's not a good idea to not give kids any support.

I think this option seem pretty bad to be honest.

So what went wrong, we didn't sign the right guys? I don't see many options to Gabby and BR — even in hindsight. We should have made "hockey trades"? Sure, AA/Dubi/Step/McD/MDZ can be traded for good returns, but they also each opens up a spot if moved...

Nah, we should learn from our history, but we should also tell the story as is. It's not like we have made moves that set us back. You can argue back and forth some parts: as keeping Gabby vs getting Nash etc etc etc. But I think it's quit obvious that standing pat and being paralyzed can be a pretty sheitty option too...

And neither Nash nor Richards did much in the playoffs. I don't think either player has made this team significantly better or worse. We have good players, we just don't have enough of them throughout the roster.

Through the first 2 rounds of the Playoffs Toews had 1 goal and 6 assists.

Rick Nash had 1 goal and 4 assists.

12 games does not a career make. Nash was also matched up against Zdeno Chara the whole 2nd round.

Our entire team played pretty mediocre in the 2nd round....couple that with Boston just flat out being a better team top to bottom.

lets also remember that 2 of our wins were thanks to Nashs passing. Got the puck to Step, got the puck to Kreider for game winners if im not mistaken.

Why do you quote my post with that comment??? You think I care about your opinion on Nash's play against Boston. There are 100 posts from kids at this place a day on that.

Did I say that the moves made put us over the top?

You need to grow up. There are 30 teams in this league that wants to win. Nobody will step aside and hand us the cup just because we are the New York Rangers.

So what, we wasn't good enough. I only asked you if the alternative was better. Would the roster I listed above have beaten Boston? Would we be better with that roster? Would we have a better future? Would we be closer to the cup?

No, nobody can argue that.

So never making a move again shouldn't be an option either.

Make the good moves. Make the best possible moves. Get better. Build a team, using the best options: whether it's drafting, tradin or signing UFAs may differ from every single decision.

Nash — alone — carried this team, with and without Gabby on it, for big parts of the regular season. We finnish around 10th in the east without him for sure, and have a bottom 3-5 offense...

grabo played shutdown minutes with the leafs last year with Kulemin (although very ineffective). Could be used as idea for AVs ideal 3C.

Ola, I agree with your point in general.

The flip side of the argument, at least to me, is: if the org had really taken it's medicine from 07-10, knowing they were just treading water, icing even worse rosters...what kind of players would they have been able to draft in those years?

Knowing the Rangers it would have been like Zach Hamill, Kyle Beach, Scott Glennie, and Nino. But it's definitely another way to look at it.

Grabovski is one of the few players who took beatings from Chara and still scored a beauty later in the game. Remember, he is 5' 11"- 6' 0".

And from the same game:

I wonder if you split up Sathers FA signings as guys under 28 vs. guys over 28 if you would see a clear pattern.

Grabovski really should be the #1 FA target for this team since their biggest hole in the lineup in the 3C mark that can play a shutdown game like Grabovski has.

Unless they move some salary I don't see how they can do it.

id trade Boyle for some prospects and picks. give Lindberg Miller a chance... sign Mikhael Grabovski... Boyle is gonna make 1.8 next season. rather use that on someone who can score a little...
