Until the Shattenkirk trade goes down, it's tough to make a judgement on the team.
If we move him, we need another defenseman for better balance. Schmaltz isn't ready to provide that. I'm annoyed we weren't in a position to get Bødker, depending on what he is looking for.

Shatty better go for futures now, we need to hit some home runs with prospects instead of getting more stop gap vets

No, it doesn't guarantee it but we are a better team with those two.
Should have known this off-season would be a dud when we gave Hitch another year and were told Jaskin was going to play a bigger role on the team.

What a train wreck, hard to get excited for this team next year. Hopefully Army can do something big with Shattenkirk.
Today was decent. A lot hinges on the Shattenkirk trade, where we need a solid return.

Plus Fabbri's growth... eh. I don't think we really got a whole lot worse, maybe just a little. But again, offseason isn't done yet.
I'm glad we didn't get Boedker, aside from his speed I'm not a fan. Meh player.

He isn't anything special, but he is a good defensive player that can put up 50 points and has the main thing we are missing.

Strickland saying Army sees the roster as "complete", which I don't really know how to take. That sounds like he's done exploring the Shattenkirk trade route, which if that's the case we are unquestionably worse than last season. Total failure of an offseason if we lose Backes and can't replace him with someone from a Shattenkirk deal.

It will be interesting to see which way this goes, especially if he goes to BOS. Could be for Krecji or could be for Spooner and picks/prospects. I honestly wouldn't mind taking a step back next year as long as we were making the right moves for the next 3-5 years. It just seems unlikely that Army would hand this roster to Hitch for his last year.

Is it bad that I'm not even surprised by the bolded? We're not drastically worse then what we were, but we're not better either.
All GM speak. He's not going to come out and admit they still need to get better or that they're seeking a trade. He wants to act like he's content and make other GMs blink first.

Definitely could be that, but he said something similar last season following the Oshie trade and pretty much held to his word. That was right around the time he said "well if the fans were expecting 12 new forwards and 6 new defenseman they're going to be disappointed".

for how long though. Backes is already declining in my opinion. Brouwer...eh, liked him but that would be 4 years of a whipping boy.
It wasn't worth the long term investment. I would bet Armstrong would admit such, but signing those 2 tie up a significant amount of cap.
