yeah i’m a bit curious what the plan was for Trouba’s cap space. If the plan was to use it on any of these guys today, that plan is out the window

Nah there’s nothing up his sleeve. Drury is just clearing space for next year. He’s running it back and plugging the holes
with guys from the bargain bin. It’s sad. This roster is flawed, but there’s nothing he can do.
Herman brings up a pretty good point on twitter. Even if we do move Trouba the options to use that open cap are at basically 0 when it comes to free agency. Really makes you wonder if there is something bigger in the works. Tkachuk, Marner??

We have seen it before, Drury moves quietly

It will be very, very funny if Drury's plan for the cap space is to take on contracts with picks attached to refill the pipeline.

Heads would spin for weeks.

Don't know what the AAV is going to be but would have preferred a 1yr deal with Skinner over Reilly.
You say that now, but Skinner couldn't find the D zone with a map & a spot light, plus the huge knock on him is he's not a team first player.

Smith is the polar opposite...plays hard every shift, PKs & is a threat shorthanded, is an excellent passer, plus he has an underrated wrist shot which he's usually good for 20-25 goals a year.

Overpay. But he took Smith cause the whole Stanley Cup winner thing. Replacement of Goodrow essentially but with more skill.

And only a one year deal-- which means we can let him walk when we need every dime for shesty, laffy and miller.

Everything Vince said on his podcast about not being able to afford long term deals and big money is coming to fruition. I think we wanted guys like Toffoli and a few others, but I don't think we wanted to go more than 1-2 years. Probably offered higher AAV but on very short term deals.

It's not next season that's screwing things up. It's the year after.

Still no answers at top4 D and 1RW.

Maybe the real free agent signing all along is our player who we antagonized but are now going to have no choice but to reconcile with

what D are we adding? they're all gone. Trouba is probably staying.

There's no way Trouba is staying here now, absolutely 0. There will be some D show up between now and the start of the season. May even be one come back in a Trouba deal, just need a 3rd pair rd anyway to replace him.

Don't know about those 2 names, but something is up. Even last year, with no money, we already added Quick, Wheeler, Gus, Nick, Pitlick. Nobody this year. Something is going on.
My GUESS is they wanted trouba trade done this weekend so they could spend today. Trouba didn't roll with it so nyr is stuck and couldn't get into ufa today. I bet Detroit is on his list now. Now nyr panics and trades for smith to get a winger. This off-season is looking like a mess bc they probably needed to pay for the retention on the smith trade bc they didn't have the cap space without unloading trouba.
