My GUESS is they wanted it done this weekend so they could spend today. Trouba didn't roll with it so nyr is stuck and couldn't get into ufa today. I bet Detroit is on his list so it held everything up. Now nyr panics and trades for smith to get a winger. This off-season is looking like a mess

Lol...it's July 1st

It will be very, very funny if Drury's plan for the cap space is to take on contracts with picks attached to refill the pipeline.

Heads would spin for weeks.
my head is spinning that you would think that's even possible lol.

NYR don't value draft picks, never have. when have they ever done anything like weaponize cap space to acquire a small long term asset advantage?

we're the team that gives ARI 2 2nds to eat Nemeth.

Overpay. But he took Smith cause the whole Stanley Cup winner thing. Replacement of Goodrow essentially but with more skill.

And only a one year deal-- which means we can let him walk when we need every dime for shesty, laffy and miller.

Everything Vince said on his podcast about not being able to afford long term deals and big money is coming to fruition. I think we wanted guys like Toffoli and a few others, but I don't think we wanted to go more than 1-2 years. Probably offered higher AAV but on very short term deals.

It's not next season that's screwing things up. It's the year after.

Still no answers at top4 D and 1RW.
Unless something dramatic happens, I'd be penciling in Smith with the BFFs.

smith skates circles around goodrow so we've already upgraded the offense. not sure it will matter much with such a bad D core though.

Carrick is the Goodrow replacement

The Rangers have $8.1m in cap space left with 14 forwards, (4) d-men and (2) goalies right now. One of those forwards will drop down I'm sure but they will need a 7th d-man. Schneider and Lindgren should I hope, not cost more than ~$5.5m in total. If they do, they're in trouble.

Rangers done up front -- 14 forwards plus Othmann and Berard knocking on the door. Five centers (Zib, Tro, Chytil, Carrick, Brodz) fills that need. Maybe 1 more AAAA who plays center but he'll be earmarked for HFD.

Think they'll hockey trade Trouba for Holl (type) and give the money for a Schneider extension. And they'll be done.

True, but most summer building and building usually happens at the draft and UFA.

People that are banking on some big trade for improvement, I ask what assets do we have that we can/will trade for some sort of high level player? We don't have the pieces for a big trade addition.

It is extremely possible if not probably that Trouba not moving cost the rangers extra in the smith trade for the retention.

Nor the flexibility with the NMCs.

The money will get used for something. And it WOULD be funny.

But looking at capfriendly (still around!!) I think it'll go for a Schneider extension if anything.

Tarasenko is not what this team needs. Smith is. One can pass the puck and skate, the other doesn't
His skating looked pretty good in Game 6 when he went the lentif the ice to right in front of Igor to bury the pass and send us on our way. Still one of the best wrist shots in the game. I think he could teach Othmann how to get to the right areas to maximize his shot.
