Proposal: Free agency edition Trade Rumours/Proposals [MOD - Stay on Topic] 5

  • We sincerely apologize for the extended downtime. Our hosting provider, XenForo Cloud, encountered a major issue with their backup system, which unfortunately resulted in the loss of some critical data from the past year.

    What This Means for You:

    • If you created an account after March 2024, it no longer exists. You will need to sign up again to access the forum.
    • If you registered before March 2024 but changed your email, username, or password in the past year, those changes were lost. You’ll need to update your account details manually once you're logged in.
    • Threads and posts created within the last year have been restored.

Our team is working with Xenforo Cloud to recover data using backups, sitemaps, and other available resources. We know this is frustrating, and we deeply regret the impact on our community. We are taking steps with Xenforo Cloud to ensure this never happens again. This is work in progress. Thank you for your patience and support as we work through this.

I'm not saying we should "sell high" on Chabot, but looking at where the market is with Chychrun getting 9M from WSH, Chabot might be very valuable this offseason to a team who struck out finding a D in free agency.

8M x 4Y for Chabot will seem reasonable with how the market is changing.

Maybe if we could leverage Karlsson's NMC to get him for cheap, we could flip Chabot for good return like we did with Norris, and then being Karlsson in to replace him for less. It might help restock the cupboards a bit for Staios.
As long as we have Jensen, we need to keep Chabot unless there is a clear upgrade that is too good to turn down (which is unlikely to happen). It's been a long time since we've had a solid top 4.

It wouldn't surprise me if Staios looked to trade Chabot for a cheaper alternative, but I think Sanderson emerging as an excellent powerplay QB (2nd in the league in PP points for a reason) should probably kill the idea of Karlsson returning to Ottawa.

Pittsburgh had the option to go full rebuild at this year's deadline with the crazy prices being paid for talent, but they chose to hold onto guys like Rakell, Rust and Karlsson. They apparently aren't willing to blow up the team while Crosby, Malkin and Letang are still on the team, and given the decline of Letang, I don't see them giving away Karlsson for nothing to get his contract off the books.

I don't think it makes sense to trade much for Karlsson if he's only going to QB our 2nd PP or push Sanderson out of a role he's excelling in. Have to think we'd get outbid at the very least by teams that actually need a offensive D of his caliber.

I wonder if Ottawa and San Jose revisit Mario Ferraro.

I might be misremembering, but I think his name came up in rumours, and then we later heard about Staios and Grier working on a bigger Norris trade until Buffalo ruined it for San Jose by agreeing to Cozens.

I don't know that San Jose would want Chabot, but a 3-way deal or Chabot to a third team could make it work. Although, San Jose does need to take a step forward now that they have Smith and Celebrini - they won't be a top free agent destination, Chabot is a legitimate star when he is on his game. Ferraro and assets for Chabot might make sense.

My preference is that we keep Chabot.

As long as we have Jensen, we need to keep Chabot unless there is a clear upgrade that is too good to turn down (which is unlikely to happen). It's been a long time since we've had a solid top 4.

My hope is that Jensen's mobility allows him to play well into his mid 30s as a top 4 defender, but we have to keep in mind that he is 35 in September and a pending 2026 UFA.

I agree that outside of a ridiculous return, we should keep Chabot. It's more speculation about what the market could look like with the rising cap figures and Chabot's elevated play, and whether Staios would consider moving him.

It'll be interesting if Giroux resigns, what it'll be for. I can't see him going elsewhere, as he's settled in his hometown with his growing family, won't want to move again.

Perron makes $4 mil, and is clearly better than Giroux at this point.

1 year $3.5 mil?

I'm sure it'll be a series of 1 year deals until he's done.

Maybe he'll surprise everyone and retire?

i dont know about clearly better

Giroux looked a lot better to start the year and seems a step slower now. That being said he is an older player and we are 70 games in. He has 6 points in 12 games for March. He has 46 points in 70 games (0.66 ppg) for the season.

Perron obviously had his reasons to miss games but because of that he has only played about half the games that Giroux has this year. I am sure thats a huge benefit for an older player. He has 9 points in 12 games for March. He has 13 points in 32 games (0.41 ppg) for the season.

Perron has been playing good hockey recently. But objectively Giroux has been too. Giroux just was a step too slow to play with Timmy. Both those things can be true.

I dont see Giroux taking less than 4.5 a year personally especially with the cap jump. He is still on pace for 54 points this season. If we use last year as a reference point it would put him tied for 101st in forward production. Thats still solid #4 forward production.

Id feel way more comfortable with a 1-year for Giroux. Obviously it’s a two way street though and he’s going to have his demands on what he thinks is fair. I just find he seems to be losing a step quite rapidly. With the cap going up, and most of our players already locked up long-term, it might be a non-issue.

Probably 15%(ish).
Less than half that, + - 6%. The biggest discrepancy in the NHL is Seattle to Montreal which is an average tax rate of 43.4% vs 49.77%. Any other state vs any other province is less. *Source, I did the math for the 82 game schedule.

US federal tax + minor state taxes (like infrastructure tax) that people like to ignore + 41 away games that are taxed at local rates = less of a gap than people think. It's the most blown out of proportion flavour of the month debate in the NHL right now.

Factor in how far the US dollar goes in Canada (relative to the absurd cost of living in major US cities) and the 'tax free' advantage in places like Texas, Florida, Vegas and Washington is a complete mirage.

It makes no sense that people are even talking about it considering the factors at play and it's an excuse that needs to go away.
