Proposal: Free agency edition Trade Rumours/Proposals [MOD - Stay on Topic] 5

  • We sincerely apologize for the extended downtime. Our hosting provider, XenForo Cloud, encountered a major issue with their backup system, which unfortunately resulted in the loss of some critical data from the past year.

    What This Means for You:

    • If you created an account after March 2024, it no longer exists. You will need to sign up again to access the forum.
    • If you registered before March 2024 but changed your email, username, or password in the past year, those changes were lost. You’ll need to update your account details manually once you're logged in.
    • Threads and posts created within the last year have been restored.

Our team is working with Xenforo Cloud to recover data using backups, sitemaps, and other available resources. We know this is frustrating, and we deeply regret the impact on our community. We are taking steps with Xenforo Cloud to ensure this never happens again. This is work in progress. Thank you for your patience and support as we work through this.

Zetterlund is arbitration eligible. He isn't signing for 2.4M. I don't think it's likely an arbitrator would award him a ruling that low after two straight 20 goal seasons. Sens do have some leverage because of his lack of production and his role since coming to Ottawa, but I'd be shocked if it was that low.

Spending right up to the cap ceiling also is not advisable. In their recent SSM Q&A, Staios mentioned how difficult it was to make moves because of their cap situation. So whether they have 3M, 4M, 5M, etc open, I don't think they spend it all.

Staios claimed that we will mostly have the same roster next year. Things do change, and maybe he is not going to tip his hand, but I don't think we're making any big splashes in the offseason. I could see some veteran role players.

We do need a solid #5 defenseman, basically a better version of what Green uses Hamonic as. Someone who belongs on the bottom pair, but in a pinch can play higher minutes if our bench is short. I am not sure we'll get that player. I could see us ending up with a Johnny Oduya situation, where maybe we sign a veteran "name" defenseman to a 1 year contract at an affordable cap hit, but they are clear beyond their best before date.

Well, since we have less room than I thought, we'll probably have Jensen as #4 next year, and will be 1 top 4 injury away from trouble. How much will Fabbro get, and how good is he? What about Ruutta, does he have anything left (depth player).
In 2026, when the cap goes up again, we'll lose Giroux, Perron, and Jensen; I suppose we could sign 1-2 of them, but they're all getting old. More likely we sign 1 UFA F and 1 UFA D that are good players, plus a couple depth guys.
The best realistic RHD UFAs in 2026 will be R Andersson and Dobson (if they aren't already signed by CGY and NYI). They'll be in line for big raises, but are very good players. For a lesser guy, how good is Josh Manson at this point?

If we acquire any defenseman other than a new version of Hamonic, I think it will be via trade for a #5 who is already signed and cost controlled. Similar to what happened with Jensen. I think we will both be outpriced of free agency, and we aren't an attractive destination.

New Jersey is very deep at D. If they re-sign Dumoulin, I wonder if we would target one of their players. Maybe Siegenthaler? He would fit in as a #5 type defensive defenseman who could move up and down the lineup. He might be a fit beside Yakemchuk if he makes the jump to the team in 2026 or 2027. He is signed for another 3 seasons at a lower cap hit than what a UFA will cost us (if they will even come), and his contract was also front-loaded, so in terms of real dollars he is very cheap.

I wouldn't mind getting someone like Mayfield, but his $3.5 million cap hit isn't the most attractive, especially with 5 more years of it and he's already 32. Then again, I believe Hamonic was 30-31 when we acquired him. Mayfield also has a NMC so not sure he'd waive to come to Ottawa.

I get where folks are coming from, but think it's more likely that if there is a new D that it is someone of the Kyle Burroughs, Jani Hakanpaa (if he can play), Nick Perbix variety.

I don't disagree with you. I'm just saying that if we get someone who is a tier or two above those names you mentioned, that I think it will be in a trade for a player who is already cap controlled rather than a free agent signing.

And honestly that's all we need.

Our top 5 D are set. Sanderson, Chabot and Kleven will lock down the left side, Zub and Jensen will be the top 2 RD and Matinpalo has looked solid on the bottom pair.

Just need to add some good depth in case of injury.

Need to see more of last night Kleven - he played well I thought (massive hit on Watson). Of course, that could have been the Matinpalo effect.

I mean perbix is likely starting over matinpalo. I wouldn’t be surprised if staios upgrades that bottom pair big time.

Kleven seems to play very well with Matinpalo. Spent some time in Belleville as a pairing and the chemistry is obvious.

Night and day compared to when Kleven is saddled with babysitting Hamonic.

We need at least 1, ideally 2, D in the top 4 that can clear the crease. All of our top 4D defend with their sticks and it's a problem. How easy is it to score on us with the goalie pulled because we don't have anyone physical in the top 4.

I think we need someone better at RD than Matinpalo who I view as our #7 depth D. The new RD will have to be big, strong, physical and like to hit people clearing the crease and punishing Fs entering our D zone (plus decent at playing D). I doubt he will be able to score many points too.

...Nick Perbix

Fabbro or Perbix.
Why Fabbro?

Back in 2015 the scouting report said"Dante Fabbro is a dependable two-way defenseman with high offensive upside. He plays with poise and makes mature, high-percentage decisions under pressure. In his own end, he is proactive with both his body and stick, and does everything right to interrupt passing lanes and win back possession. With the puck on his stick, he is mobile at an elite level and can direct plays like a quarterback. He possesses a hard and accurate release on his shot, that he gets off quickly and on-net. All-in-all, a complete defenseman that plays a refined game at both ends of the ice. (Curtis Joe, EP 2015)"

His stats in the NHL do not reflect that "offensive" potential. He is age 27, 6'0" 190 lbs. Not particularly big.

Why?

He seems like a 3rd pair, 4th depth, AHL defenseman. I read a report on him and it said noting about his physical play. He is not described as a playmaker or a D who can skate the puck out of his D zone.
16pts, +3, 15min per night playing 3rd pairing in Tampa with Lilleberg. He is the steadying influence on that pairing and while he won't knock anyone out of their skates, he plays defense well enough that TB controls the play with him away from Lilleberg (the way Kleven is better away from Hamonic).

He won't be prohibitively expensive. He's an American kid (sell him on playing with Brady, Shane, Jake). He's 26 and can be effective for a few years allowing Yakemchuk time to develop.

I'm old enough to remember Scott Stevens, but those guys aren't really out there anymore. Need a cheaper guy that can play sound defense and chip in - Perbix.

That said, I'm open to about anyone that can play the right side and is better than Hamonic.

I would love to get a Volchenkov clone.

Any acquisition that becomes half of the beast that Volchenkov will have me ecstatic. A-Train was one of a kind. He didn't give a f*** he would block half a dozen shots, throw out half a dozen bone crunching hits, and skate to the bench like it was nothing.

They need another legitimate top 4 RHD. Jensen is 35 and has one year left, Zub while great cant stay healthy. Having 3 legit guys would match well with the 3 LD they have then Matinpalo is #7.

I dont know how they get one but thats the biggest organizational need in the offseason.

Hopefully Yakemchuk is ready in two seasons once Jensen is gone.

Yeah he'll have to be replaced soon, but I think Jensen is good for at least another year, there's no need to replace him an offseason in advance, he can fill that role nicely next season.

I think it would be better to target a solid bottom pairing RHD that can move up in the lineup in case of injuries. Like Josh Manson was for Colorado when they won the cup.
