Proposal: Free agency edition Trade Rumours/Proposals [MOD - Stay on Topic] 5

  • We sincerely apologize for the extended downtime. Our hosting provider, XenForo Cloud, encountered a major issue with their backup system, which unfortunately resulted in the loss of some critical data from the past year.

    What This Means for You:

    • If you created an account after March 2024, it no longer exists. You will need to sign up again to access the forum.
    • If you registered before March 2024 but changed your email, username, or password in the past year, those changes were lost. You’ll need to update your account details manually once you're logged in.
    • Threads and posts created within the last year have been restored.

Our team is working with Xenforo Cloud to recover data using backups, sitemaps, and other available resources. We know this is frustrating, and we deeply regret the impact on our community. We are taking steps with Xenforo Cloud to ensure this never happens again. This is work in progress. Thank you for your patience and support as we work through this.

In the meantime, feel free to join our Discord Server
You can't really play the "you most likely won't get picked up" game with a player, because ultimately it's not Ullmark's problem and he isn't going to risk having to move if he doesn't want to. Similar to what happened with Phaneuf refusing to waive.

With that said, if the expansion is Houston, it might be a can't lose situation for Ullmark. Most players would view Houston as an upgrade to Ottawa in terms of amenities and the tax implications. So either, he gets selected and goes to a no-tax state - or he doesn't get selected and he keeps his tandem together, which lessens the workload for him. He clearly seems to be a goalie who prefers to have a solid 1B or #2 behind him.
Ya, Texas is a no tax state. Houston is really hot with very high humidity. Not pleasant at all in the summer.

If Zetterlund gets promoted to the top nine for next season Amadio could find himself on the 4th line & could make a decent mentor for Halliday as he was for Pinto & Greig. I would still like to see them pursue Michael McCaron this summer, he would be a cheap upgrade on Highmore & Gaudette although it would not surprise me if Gaudette got extended after this season based on the goals he had during this season. McCaron would bring the physicality & enforcer this team needs & he has the speed & defensive ability to keep up, play on the PK, hit, take faceoffs, can play C or LW & add some offence to that 4th line. Halliday - McCaron - Amadio/Gaudette & in a couple of yrs Halliday moves to Centre & if Montgomery becomes an NHL player we end up with Montgomery - Halliday - McCaron/Amadio or Gaudette until a younger RW comes along to take that spot. This team needs a better 4th line for next season.

Enough time has past that I can elaborate on some of the TDL stuff.

What was new for this year?
A second war room for all the non GMs, Scouts etc, the near vicinity of the usual war room.

Goal was to try and be as quick and seamless with getting information out, and trying to beat the Friedman's of the world if they could.

Sens 365 was supposed to be running live throughout the entire day but they got caught up in the Norris trade so it took them a while to get going.

Laud audible cheer from the War Room when the Zetterlund deal went down.

Thats how I found out about the last minute deal.

Also…if Zetterlund doesn’t work out here then we could probably sign and trade him for peterka.

Can you ask your source if anybody was punished for leaking the trade a week early through multiple racks of Norris jerseys?

It's tough being a verified insider because you want to break stuff for the fans but you don't want to see anybody get hurt or lose their job.

Our very own Sens insider Benjamin McKenzie. Kudos.

Unlike most, I don't see Peterka coming to Ottawa, in fact why would Buff trade him when he is likely a piece they see building around. You never know but I doubt we can afford him anytime soon & IMO their need is somewhere else at the moment but we'll see. Should be an interesting summer too.

We will have some cap dollars to spend but getting Peterka would also cost us assets too; so a UFA signing might be more affordable.

Peterka wants out and fans want him gone.
incentive enough.

If we offer them the best deal, like we presumably did for Cozens, sure they would trade him here.

But it makes no sense.

1) We don't have cap flexibility to pay him or to defend against a reasonable offer sheet.
2) We don't have good assets to trade for him.
3) The divisional rival status means the deal has to be great for both sides. If they are going to sell for pennies on the dollar, they can do it out West.

Look at how tidy the work of Staios was last season making all the moves to get the cap and pieces in place, and avoid Pinto being left open as an RFA. It doesn't make sense to expect him to acquire Peterka and risk being unable to sign him if he wants anything other than a quick and easy bridge deal.

I get why people want him, but it seems difficult to imagine a sensible way a trade gets made.

Even if they would do Pinto+ for Peterka, the cap then becomes an issue next season. I also doubt they want to move Pinto. Also, if there is a + or a ++ involved, it complicates things due to how asset poor we are.

I think our cap flexibility is better than you're giving credit, it's just that we'd have to make choices.

Next year, if we put aside ~8 mil to extend Giroux and Zetterlund, and fill in the depth (cousins, Hamonic, Gilbert, Gaudette ect) with similar depth contracts, we'll have around 4-5 mil in cap space. But, we don't need to extend Giroux, if we're picking up a guy like Peterka, it seems to me that's a long term replacement for Giroux. We're also going into the last year for Perron, who could potentially be moved if needed, even if that does require some retention, same for Jensen if a better top 4 option avails itself.

The issue that concerns me more than cap is budget flexibility, particularly with the Canadian dollar where it is.

I really want to sign Fabbro.

I'm not saying we should "sell high" on Chabot, but looking at where the market is with Chychrun getting 9M from WSH, Chabot might be very valuable this offseason to a team who struck out finding a D in free agency.

8M x 4Y for Chabot will seem reasonable with how the market is changing.

Maybe if we could leverage Karlsson's NMC to get him for cheap, we could flip Chabot for good return like we did with Norris, and then being Karlsson in to replace him for less. It might help restock the cupboards a bit for Staios.
