Proposal: Free agency edition Trade Rumours/Proposals [MOD - Stay on Topic] 5

Batherson +
This summer:
To Buff: Zetterlund RW/LW
To Ott: Jack Quinn RW

I was going to say there's no way Buffalo gives up Peterka for Batherson or Quinn for Zetterlund, but then I remembered Kevyn Adams is their GM and just added to Cozens to acquire a shoulderless Josh Norris, so who the hell knows.

He's the cloest thing to a Pierre Dorion this league has left, so I'm all in favour of trading with the Sabres again.

Now with zetterlund here I think my mangiapane dream is dead.
Not that I think he's a good fit here, but in the event that Giroux isn't extended, Mangiapane wouldn't be too expensive. His current caphit is $5.8 million and he's on pace to score 28 points. His next contract shouldn't go past $5 million. Washington has balanced scoring and Mangiapane isn't getting the same ice time. He could be a decent signing if he doesn't cost more than $4 million for a year. He's 28 though, and some GM might be dumb enough to blow their wallet on him.

Also, we had better be all over the list of top NCAA free agents this year. Our prospect pool is incredibly thin, so we need to go sign one or two of them and see if we can re-stock the pond somewhat. Leafs already beat us to one of the better defencemen...

Our top 4D definitely need some work. All good players but the wrong mix. Teams just throw it at the pads and our D don't have the strength to tie them up or move them out of the way.

Could see 2 of 3 of Chabot/Zub/Jensen moved for different type of D, similar to how we moved Norris for Cozens.
I doubt that more than 1 might be traded to get a bigger tougher more physical D. I suspect Zub or Jensen might be the one moved.

I doubt we do much this summer, we just made our moves. Bottom pairing RD upgrade, and resigning Cousins for the 4th line is about all we need.

If we can up grade the 4th line centre position we could have a solid line with Perron or G on the other wing and be able to roll 4 lines.

We definitely aren’t trading away a top 4d now that we finally have strong pairs.
Perron ($4M) and Giroux ($6.5M or less) are not at the salary-level of 4th liners.

I think Staios does see the weakness we have on D and will potentially trade 1 of the top 4 to address it (i.e., get a bigger, tougher more physical defensive oriented D). The one traded will most likely be Jensen or Zub; not Chabot nor Sanderson.

While I agree with your premise, I think there is a possibility that the Senators aren't high on the draft this year. The Norris trade returned a 2026 2nd when Buffalo had a 2025 - and they moved a 2025 2nd instead of a 2026 in the Zetterlund trade. Given the context that we have heard this draft characterized as very weak in the late 1st and beyond, it's possible that they weren't viewing it like it would produce a 2nd round talent with that pick.

Honestly, I thought Zetterlund came pretty cheap considering some of the price of rentals, and the fact that he still has team control. But it really depends on how you view Ostapchuk and whether you think he is still a close to first round type talent.
Perhaps the trading of the 2025 picks is an omen that the team will forfeit its 2025 1st round pick for the Dorion Debacle.

He was asked this today, and basically shot down the idea of the league going easy on them. I don't remember his exact wording, but what I got from it was they are going to have to give up the pick.

He refused to tip his hand about which year they would give up, and said that they will have to see where they finish and how the scouts view the available prospects.

I would be shocked if they keep the pick this year. Even if we miss the playoffs, it's probably around mid-teens. If we make the playoffs, it's going to be late teens and beyond. With the way this draft has been characterized, I don't see them keeping it.

The team has also taken a major step forward. The last thing we need looming over next season is the distraction of the fans/media watching where our unprotected pick is every time we lose more than one game in a row. I look at it like giving it up this year is another step in putting the past chaos of the Dorion/Melnyk years behind us.

It's actually kinda crazy how many good pieces we already have in our lineup for next year:

Tkachuk - Stutzle - ??? <- Giroux is a UFA
Perron - Cozens - Batherson
Greig - Pinto - Amadio
Zetterlund - ??? - ??? <- MacEwen is still signed and could fit here

Sanderson - Zub
Chabot - Jensen
Kleven - Matinpalo
Yak

Ullmark
Merilainen

I don't see Perron going anywhere. The shopping list for Staios will involve making a decision on Giroux (re-sign and/or replace with better top line forward), and providing some depth for the bottom 6 and for our D.
Giroux does not fit on the 1st line and Batherson has the 2RW position. That would push Giroux down to the 3rd line and Amadio to the 4th line.

Zetterlund should move up from the 4th line to 2nd or 3rd line LW or possibly 1RW if we do not sign a top 6 RW. That means Perron and/or Greig might be moved. Greig could find himself on the 4th line with Amadio and perhaps Cousins. Perron might be pushed down to 3RW.

Thats the type of depth we should be striving for especially since we dont have unlimited dollars to play with

Tkachuk-Stutzle-Forward/Zetterlund
Forward/Zetterlund-Cozens-Batherson
Perron-Pinto-Giroux
Forward/Cousins-Grieg-Amadio

If we replace Cousins with a center we can mix up the bottom 6 to be
Grieg-Pinto-Giroux
Perron-Forward-Amadio

Thats a team where the entire forward group looks good imo. Having the ability to run 4 lines and reduce the minutes for our big names in games when it isnt needed (without sacrificing much) would be a huge game changer

Not the type Staios will want.

You know there’s a salary cap, right ?

Tierny is probably the main guy against that archetype, I'd imagine he was in Staios ear with Zetterlund and Cozens

I don't think there is really any evidence to suggest Staios has a preference for big players. When you look at what he's added, most of the players are not particularly big...

Gaudette [6'1, 187]
Cousins [5'11, 186]
Zetterlund [5'11, 220]
Jensen [6'0, 196]
Perron [6'0, 198]
Amadio [6'1, 199]
Gregor [6'0, 201]

It's really only Cozens who is larger than league average.

It’s our amateur guys who have been big on
size.

Of the past 26 picks since the 21’ draft only 4 are shorter than 6’2, only 5 are lighter than 200. There were 13 guys 6’4 or bigger.

They used literally half of their 26 picks from 2021-2024 on guys who were 6’4 or taller. That’s absurd.

Bigger is better, no denying that, all teams are going to have emphasis on size, as they should. Sens take it, along with the physical stuff and tools, much stronger in their approach at the draft than most/all other teams.

Even back a few years, the pro side grabbed Dadonov, DBC, Del Zotto, Stepan, Mete, Ennis, etc.

Our pro scouts were just pretty bad, and it did a very bad job, from 2018-2024. Not that they were size queens.

Well either way, it's not like those players were really contributing for most of the year other than Jensen. Gaudette did early and others are coming on late. We need more players who bring it 5 on 5 for 82 games next year, whatever statistics they use.
