If they wanted this team to spend waste our limited assets on short-term help, despite the team clearly not being a legitimate contender, they shouldn't have choked away a clear hold on a playoff spot by going 2-5-1 in their last 8 games, with the only wins being nailbiters against the two worst teams in the league.

Simple as.

In all seriousness, beyond systems, Rantanen has basically only played in cold climate winter sport cities his whole life. It's not far fetched to assume he might legit want to play in a traditional market. Ullmark had LA on his NTC but not Ottawa.

And I think his number 1 priority is fit in the future. Not location. It's money and fit. We can offer him 13 million even with high tax, but we can 100% be attractive to him. Having Stutzle and Tkachuk with Sanderson as a core has to be as attractive a core as any for a gamebreaking winger.

The money might not be enough here. I think if Vegas does it, they are everything he would want. Money+Fit everything else. Eichel and Rantanen would be stupid.

That Dumoulin trade is a massive headscratcher.

Hughes is not coming back for the playoffs, why waste the limited young assets the Devils possess by paying extortionary deadline prices for Dumoulin when the Devils almost certainly aren't winning the cup this year?

Fitzgerald should have kept his powder dry for next season. Really dumb move.

I wonder if they are trading Nemec for a centre. Siegenthaler is hurt, but I am unsure what is ETA is for returning.

They can't leave the deadline without getting a C. The Hughes injury could realistically cost them a playoff spot. They are 5 points up this time of year, which is substantial, but they also have 2-3 games in hand on the other teams.

If they are dealing with us for Norris, maybe we'd go after Kovacevic. The fact that he isn't re-signed yet makes me think that a deal with New Jersey isn't going to happen. He is a former Ottawa Jr. Senator. So maybe it would be something like Kovacevic+Assets for Norris, then we flip those assets for a forward to fill in the Norris spot (Donato, etc).

Dumoulin would come in to replace Kovacevic. That makes sense to me if we're wildly speculating.

Rantanen only has a 9 team list. If he submitted his list on July 1st 2024, putting Ottawa on it would have made no sense. He already knows that they know he won't re-sign, because it's Ottawa. Then you look at the assets we have. The likelihood of us (as we appeared on July 1st) being in a position to spend multiple 1st rounders on a rental. It's a waste of a spot.

Mostly playing Devil's advocate, but you can craft what seems like a realistic scenario where he can't block a trade here. If we trade for him, there is no way it comes with an extension or even an expectation that they can keep him. It would have to be something where the market for him is soft, we put Batherson on the table, or Norris with retention, and Carolina does it because downgrading to Batherson but maintaining control of the asset for another few years is more ideal than keeping Rantanen and effectively losing Necas++ for one playoff run.

Well Norris and Hughes are basically 0.5 C each since they lose a shoulder every season. So now they’d have 2Cs in total.

My suggestion is that we would have to retain on Norris. The Devils can easily fit in Norris at 6M going forward. If we are able to take the edge off of the risk of his contract by retaining, they may prefer to give up a 1st+ for Norris who has term, than give up a 1st for Nelson or Donato as rentals who may not re-sign.

With all that said, my theory is that they added a D because they will move one out in the acquisition of a C, and that might make them a match for Norris. Not that they exclusively will want Norris as their solution.

I would agree with all this. I think it's hard for him to care in his current situation. The Penguins are a quickly sinking ship. The rumors come out and the deadline gets closer - all of a sudden EK turns up the heat.

I think if we want to pull off something special, this is the kind of move that could make it happen. Get a rejuvenated EK with the Andlauer sens, and I think we could see something amazing. I understand the risks, but it's a shot I would take.

Also: Pittsburgh is a re-tooling team that could use a centre like Norris.

Norris for EK is an overpay for the Sens.

Serious speculation on my part, but I wouldn't put it past Andlauer to make an arena announcement tomorrow. I get the SENSe he's seriously passed about the forfeited 1st not being disclosed prior to the sale and is looking for ways to upstage Bettman any chance he gets. Loved the Ullmark announcement an hour prior to the start of game 7 of the SC final last year!
