Would have made the disaster of a Matt Duchene trade actually solid if we did. Harley is arguably better than Byram now.

Would have made sense but with Dorion barely ever drafting out of the OHL it wouldn’t have fit their drafting profile, best thing about Staois is he is a OHL and CHL proponent, which I am a big fan of.

Should we trade for Lawson Crouse or sign UFA Rantanen?
The cost will be very different.
Crouse has 2 more seasons left at $4.3M and would cost roster players, prospects &/or picks.
Rantanen could cost $13M AAV over 7 years as a UFA.
it would take 15M at least to get Rantanen to Ottawa.

All teams are looking to draft taller players not just the Senators. The average height at the 2024 NHL draft was 6'3. I ranked the players in the 2024 NHL draft by height not by position they were drafted but just by height and it wasn't until I got to the 116th player drafted that the height was 5'11.

When I went by actual draft position in the 2024 NHL draft 8 of the top 50 players were 5'11 and below.

If you are 5'10 or below you will need to be a special player. Like Connor Bedard, Lane Hutson special.

The average height of an NHL player is 6'1 1/2 tall, that's going to be around 6'2 1/2 in the next few years.
In 10 years from now when you turn on an NHL game you will wonder if you are watching the NBA or the NHL.

Our scouts are the guys that Brad Pitt fires in the first part of Moneyball

"He's a good-looking player, has the bloodlines, his dad played in the NHL, has good character, is over 6' 3" & had over 100 penalty minutes for Moose Jaw last season"

I vaguely remember the rumour being that we were taking Harley if he had gotten to us. Maybe someone remembers better than I do.

I'm sure we would have.

Not to excuse the Thomson selection at all, but there was a pretty clear drop off from the top 18 guys and the rest of the 1st that year.

The only rationale that I can see is "Staios must like it as it is".
I think it was a mistake not to bring someone to be the cheif amateur scout vs promoting from within. We need someone capable of evaluating the scouting personnel. Boyd isn't going to replace the guys he's worked with for a long time here and his own competency is questionable.

Sens have no one to really take charge there and make the necessary changes and additions. I don't think Staios has that experience, nor Bowness; I doubt Poulin had hands on management of scouting in Toronto enough to evaluate what they have now. Poulin has more experience on the Pro side from what I understand.

You want to pick a bone on best in class... this is one. We don't have someone that is close to best in class responsible for amateur scouting

I remember some sort of speculation or rumblings that someone in the org was really upset because of the drop off they saw after Harley. As in, he was the last player on the board who was a tier above everybody else available.

Funny, because we apparently wanted Oettinger as well. We were also offered Hintz for Karlsson. A few different bounces and we have like half their young core.

Staios is the GM and could have replaced the Head Scout and the entire scouting staff if he wanted to do so. He has chosen not to do so. That indicates to me that he likes the Head Scout and scouting staff as it is.

I said nothing about "best in class" in my post.

I tend to agree that changes should have been made by now.

Not necessarily. Could just be that he has someone specific in mind to be head scout and they aren’t available yet or he wanted to dig in more and make sure he finds the right person.

I don’t think Boyd is Staios’ long-term guy given his age. Once he gets someone in they’ll probably make more changes to the staff from there.

yes he is; apparently he does which could be a number of things... I have been told by a top guy at hockeyprospects that Don Boyd is one of the nicest guys you'll ever meet... so not sure he has done enough or can do enough evalutation here.

I never said you did. although I think you may have elsewhere in some other post

glad you do

That might be the case; conjecture at this point.

Not surprising but the Sens are trying to move JBD according to Garrioch

after failing on Hamonic; who has a NMC and can refuse any thing they may have found which is less than likely

They will waive him if it becomes necessary and they can't find a taker

Edit>Waiving him while he is not on the roster maybe tricky if there is no cap space to bring him on to the active roster

Waive Gaudette, Activate JBD , Waive JBD, Call up Gaudette if he wasn't snagged.

Not sure of time parameters here

>be Sens scouts
>continually draft low-celing forwards that end up busting during the 2010s
>get lucky and end up winning 3OA, draft an actual skill player in Stutzle who has been great
>go back to drafting low-ceiling guys after 2020 draft

Definition of insanity etc

They probably really wanted Byfield too, and were super disappointed that they had to fall back on Stutzle.
