Draft Day Trade

:sens
  • Jack Hughes (5 years, 8M)
  • Luke Hughes (RFA, likely in line for 5M-8M on a long term extension)

:devils
  • Brady Tkachuk (3 years, 8.2M, NMC in July 2025)
  • Josh Norris (5 years, 8M)

Context:
  1. Sens make the playoffs and do alright, but don't go on a deep or substantial run.
  2. Tkachuk hasn't asked out, and the Senators aren't explicitly shopping him, but there is some blood in the water and they feel a bit uneasy about the power that a member of the Tkachuk family having a NMC could grant them.
  3. Tom Fitzgerald sniffs out the situation because he is an avid follower of Brady's wife's Instagram, and one too many "no where like home" memes lead him to believe that Keith Tkachuk may have put her up to convincing Brady to ask for a trade. It's a full press family effort. Matthew Tkachuk even liked the posts.
  4. Fitzgerald calls up Steve Staios. He knows the Senators aren't shopping Tkachuk, and aren't in a position to trade him without a real big name superstar coming back. With the falling Canadian dollar, he seduces Steve with spreadsheets showing the front loaded nature of Hughes contract. Hughes has less salary than Tkachuk, more term, and most of all he has almost no trade protection.
  5. The final addition is that the Devils will take the Norris contract and send the Senators Luke Hughes. The Devils have tremendous depth on defense, and they need to make room for a bigger role for Simon Nemec. Luke is in line for a big money extension, which makes the trade close to cap in/cap out.

I'm on record saying if we trade Brady we'd get an absolute haul, as NHL GMs are obsessed with players like him and would do insane things to get him in their team's jersey, but c'mon dude we're not getting the Hughes brothers for him and Norris.

Gotta be more realistic. If Brady were traded to the Devils we'd probably be looking at a return consisting of Mercer, Nemec/Casey and multiple 1st round picks or similar-valued pieces.

Mercer, Nemec/Casey and a couple of firsts doesn't sound too impressive. For salary purposes and actual player value, I'd hope we'd at least get Bratt in return

Bratt has a full NTC and isn't waiving to go to Ottawa.

But yeah I wouldn't be thrilled with that return. Feel like other potential fits like St. Louis, New York and others would have better main pieces to offer.

The Tkachuk window is officially open now. Andlauer and Staios need to surround him with more talents to really go for the cup. A winning Sens can ideally keep it's captain and attract other FAs this city isn't used to.

Make hay while the sun shines (by not trading him for prospects/promises/spare parts)! He is the pre-eminent power forward in the league and Ottawa is lucky to have him as its captain. His brother Matthew can join him in Ottawa if he likes in a few years ;).

Usually your deals are realistic and bad for Ottawa. I feel like today you went the opposite direction with unrealistic and good for Ottawa. A good plot twist.

Weird thing to post about when you're talking about Brady's cousin.

I didn't meant to imply he was looking at it for anything other than intel reasons, because most GMs know the wife's instagram is where you find out the truth.

Is he actually Brady's cousins? Keith Tkachuk is like the secret ruler of the NHL. How does he get all these agents and powerbrokers to marry into this family? This guy is good.

Tom Fitzgerald is a first cousin of Keith, that makes him Brady's first cousin once removed.

In a scenario where a team compels Ottawa to trade Brady, rather than Ottawa shopping Brady, I don't think it's that unrealistic. Although, it's highly improbable. The closest real life analog would be something like Nashville putting Weber up, who they never intended to trade, just because Subban was available.

New Jersey is so deep on defense. They can make this trade with Hughes in it. They would have about 9 million in cap after making the trade, which would give them enough to keep Kovacevic, who has broken out with them, and fill out the roster. If they want to be a player in free agency, they may be able to create extra room by trading Mercer.

The big consequence of it is that neither Hischier or Norris have that superstar high end offensive talent that a player like Hughes has. But they still would have a decent 1-2 combination that would be elevated by adding Brady to one of the lines. Adding a power forward like Brady in a playoff type game might elevate things enough to make up for that kind of deficiency in the lineup.

the problem is him wanting to be rid of us
We don't know that & as usual that is just those who want to get rid of him talking shit. There is always the problem with players that once they reach the point where they can determine where they want to play & it's actually an argument towards drafting Canadians who will want to play in Canada. If Brady decides he wants to play elsewhere then I expect we could lose most of the American players such as Sanderson, Pinto, Kleven & Norris.
I think maybe we better get Tkachuk a big time winger, might be time.
Tkachuk has a big time winger in Stutzle & Stutzle has a big time winger & Tkachuk. Our second line has Norris & Batherson on it, two really good players & our 3rd line also has two good young players in Greig & Pinto. And for the next 2 or 3 yrs they will still have Perron, Giroux & Amadio to support those 3 lines. The onus every yr is on the talented young roster to rise to the occasion.

Tkachuk - Stutzle - Giroux
Perron
- Norris - Batherson
Greig - Pinto - Amadio
Ostapchuk - Halliday - ?????

Sanderson - Zub
Chabot - Jensen/Yakemchuk
Kleven - Matinpalo/JBD

Ullmark - Merilainen/?????

This is a good sign that JBD would probably clear waivers too. Good to have the depth for next year when Hamonic is gone.
We might not sign JBD to a contract for future seasons. Matinpalo looks like a low cost 7D.

The Godfather!

Miller addressed the Tkachuks about leaking /talking about the group chat after the USA/Canada Round robin game.

For those that don't know.... The Tkachuk brothers revealed that Team USA had a few players on group chat discussing/staging fights vs Canada to start the game in the round robin.

Miller wasnt fond of this getting out to the public for whatever reason and told the Tkachuks to pretty much stfu next time and keep it in the room.

Alpha Dog Miller barking loud already!

Context for clarity:

Quoting the OP from the main board because they did a wonderful job putting together their OP.

If you're an avid reader of this trade thread, the above summary is pretty funny. When there was speculation about Ottawa and Miller, people were joking about him not being able to get along with Tkachuk and the kids on our team. I guess they were right.

I mean if you listen to Miller's quote he was clearly laughing and joking about it. But that headline doesn't sound as good as "Locker room cancer JT Miller HATES his own team"

That lineup doesn't make me feel very confident.
Staios will need to make two or three upgrades to make a better lineup.

An aging Giroux on the first line?

Perron an aging second line player that seems to have lost a lot of his ability to produce?

Greig and especially Amadio don't have a lot of offensive potential.

In a perfect world I wish for Amadio and Perron to be gone. That would give us $6.6 million plus the other $6 million left over would give us $12.6 to replace those two players.

1.)Maybe a trade or two by the March 7th trade deadline
Or
2.) Free agent market possibly...Ehlers or Bennett or Rantanen?

Ullmark I like him but the injuries....
Merilainen hopefully will continue his good play....but if he or Ullmark or both get injured for any length of time we will need a solid third string goalie as well.

Giroux in Ottawa:
82gp 79pts
82gp 64pts
YTD 56gm 37pts (paces out to 56pts in 82gp)

The decline is happening before our very eyes. Is Giroux a top 6 forward in Ottawa next year? I don't think so - middle 6 is more realistic (I see that as a 3rd liner that can play up in the line up for stretches). Problem is Staios went out and signed Perron and Amadio to multi-year contracts last year and both exemplify "middle-6'er" perfectly.

A 3rd line of Perron - Giroux - Amadio would be expensive and sloooooow. And I don't see any of the 3 sticking in the top 6 for a full season (platoon?).

Not sure there is room for all 3 next year and to be competitive, the Sens need Greig to take another step or leave him on the 3rd line and move Pinto up.

This year has to be viewed through the lens of a defense first system, I suspect if we were still playing the more risk taking offensive system DJ ran, Giroux's production would be pretty close to the same as last year.

At 110th in pts/g for forwards with 30+ games, he's easily producing at a top 6 rate, and unless you expect him to drop under 40-45 pts pace next year, he's likely to still be producing with a top 6 pace for forwards next year.

He's certainly getting older, and won't be a top end line driver the way he was, but people have a distorted view of what top 6 forward means, there just aren't enough guys that produce 45+ pts a year for every team to fill out their top 6, but people expect every top 6 forward to be over 50 pts. Even SC winners have guys in their top 6 around 45 pts pace, Florida had Bennett (48 pace) and Rodrigues (40 pace), Colorado had Compher (48 pace), tbay had Cerrelli (46 pace)

What we need is for other guys in the top 6 to take the lead, that means our 2nd line center, be it Norris or Pinto, and our 2nd line LW can't also be the guys hanging around 45 pts if that's where Giroux ends up.

Ottawa spending 10.5mill on Perron and G this year has hurt our cap situation. Both have declined and are taking a lot of a cap space. Their lack of speed is evident this year
