4.5 is what I was expecting leading into the year, but it is a bit concerning that he's on pace for under 40 pts
Am I missing something? He’s on pace for 54 pts.

4.5 mil for next year is fine, we’re likely going to hate that contract in that last year though.

What you are missing is I can't math..........

I must have looked at his assists and thought it was his points, problem solved!

Well, the bigger concern is the reality that he is aging, and his on ice impact is on the decline despite getting PP time and top 6 mins. I want to keep him around, and I'm ok with 4.5 for him, I'd love for him to retire a Sen, but we need to be honest about what he can provide for that money, because if we expect top 6 production from him, we might end up being disappointed.

The AAV is fine but 2 years is too much term at his age. The second year risks being essentially dead cap.

With that said, he is a very important piece. Who knows, he might be out captain next year. I'd look at it like the Foligno extension in Chicago, where a team that needs veteran leadership overpaid to keep it.

I don't think he will live up to the contract in the ice, but if it is actually a 2 year 4.5M deal, I have no problem with it. We are lucky to have him.

Interesting intel on a Giroux extension. Don't love it - this organization has a tendency to give out two years to players that deserve to go a year at a time.

Giroux is still a contributor. I think that tells a story about the lack of quality wingers on this team more than Giroux's ability to continue to contribute as time goes on. It's all relative.

I want to point out that we were spoiled to have the final year of prime Giroux come our way in year one of his contract, scoring a career high 35 goals and playing at virtually a point a game.

He has lost a step between each season since. That will continue. We need foot speed to be successful against top flight teams in the playoffs, and despite all of his attributes, his first step is a problem.

If we retain him for a few years and bring in major talent on the wings to slot ahead of him, sure. But if not, it exposes us.

To put it into perspective, with the rising cap,

4.5 next year is the equivalent of 4.147 this year,
4.5 in the final year of a 2 yr deal will be the equivalent of 3.807 this year.

You might think that we should do year by year deals for a guy at age 37, and that's fair, but with cap certainty three years out, I think the risk is significant;y mitigated from what it was in the past when we only found out what the cap will be a few months before the preceding season ends.

Even with a rising cap, $4.5 million aav is a slight overpayment by 500k. Hopefully he still scores at a 50 point pace
honestly if that cap hit is accurate i think the deal is pretty much on point

54 point pace this season

the best comparable i can find
O'Reilly: rumored to be the same cap hit, pretty much the same production with giroux getting the leg up since he is doing it while older, Giroux has more taxes to deal with in ottawa, O'Reilly is better defensively

Ok, so you think his contract should have been 4 mil next season in a 95.5 mil cap world which adjusted to an 88 mil cap is ~3.7m

Guys that got that kind of money this past offseason,

Marcus Foligno, 4m x 4yrs
Niedereider, 4m x 3yrs
Arvidsson, 4m x 2yrs
Mantha, 3.5m x 1yr
Duclair, 3.5 x 4 yrs

They all got those deals before knowing the cap was rocketing up, possibly would have gotten more had the league known the next 3 yrs of cap inflation,

How many years does Giroux even want to play? Why can't we just handshake deal where we sign him to 1 year contracts twice with massive bonuses in each rather than 2 seasons in a single contract?
He basically said he wants to play until he can no longer contribute to helping the team win.

So theoretically if he drops off next season maybe he doesn’t play the second year. And if he’s still playing well it probably winds up working out similarly anyway.

Completely valid point. It'll feel fine when I take a look at capwages and the cap percentage of the contract appears to be similar to what it is this year.

So is their plan to do nothing this summer? Or shed some salary?

Thanks for the info!
Not nothing, but they won’t spend right up to the cap to start the season.

Hating the inflexibility they have right now.

Giroux will make a little bit less, Levi will cost less than Forsberg, Hamonic off the books etc. There will be cash to add something, but I think they will give themselves a 5M cushion to start the year.

Makes sense, Staios kind of alluded to that earlier this year.

If we presume they want the 5M cushion then they’ll be spending around 91 million.

I haven’t broken down the numbers recently but I’d hope they can get Perron off the books or something because if they keep everyone it doesn’t leave a ton of room to add.

Even with a rising cap that feels hellishly high.
All things considered; I would say that $4.5m per year for Giroux is very fair.
Consider that we had to offer Perron $4m/season for 2 years to get him to come to Ottawa, $4.5m/season for Giroux is certainly justifiable.

I get it that Giroux is 37 and looks very slow some games but he is still a very intelligent player that can slow the game down, still best in the league on face-offs, strong leader, etc. etc. Many intangibles with Giroux.

If we were to lose him, we would need to replace him and even if we were to consider him a third-line player at this point, it would take at least $4.5m/season to find a replaceable player, if we can get them to come to Ottawa in the first place.

If Benjiv's info is correct, I am pretty disappointed that they are not going 1yr with performance bonuses for Giroux. Makes so much sense for next year. It could afford them most of that $5mil cushion that Benjiv is talking about.
