Proposal: Free agency edition Trade Rumours/Proposals [MOD - Stay on Topic] 5

It's going to be something really ridiculous that basically amounts to Norris for Pettersson 1-for-1.

Something like Norris+Perron+2nd for Pettersson, and then Vancouver sends Perron to STL with a 3rd round draft pick for Faksa or another roster player.

While everybody can agree doing basically Norris for Pettersson very close to 1-for-1 is not at all fair value, I think that we might be the only team that can give them a top 6 center for Pettersson, and based on Rutherford's comments yesterday they expect to get scraps in return. He basically tried to condition the fans to the idea that they need a C back and would be lucky to get a 2C in their position of weakness.

It's going to be a Hall for Larsson type trade, where everybody goes "that's it". Carolina dropping out might have collapsed the market on them, and if the best player on the table for Miller was Chytil, Norris is a big step above him.

Saad might sign with a team like the Oilers, and next year might be contend with signing with a team on the upswing like us. I hope so at least. Can we convince Perron to retire and give him a great role with the team and thus allow him to spend more time with family?

Yeah, he has made a lot of money. Even if you assume half goes to taxes, escrow, etc, it's still 30 million dollars.

I still think it takes some gumption to walk away from another year and a half of guaranteed money. My guess is that he signs for league minimum on a team willing to give him a NMC that he thinks he can be a better fit on.

I wonder if this motivates any other players to do something similar. It shows the power of a NMC because my guess is that if he had a NMC and couldn't be assigned to the AHL, he doesn't terminate.

The team Friedman linked to Pettersson was Buffalo, and they can offer much more than we can.

Cozens, Byram, prospects, picks… they basically have everything.

That makes sense. I don't actually expect us to land him. I'm saying if we do, I think a soft return for them around Norris will be the circumstances.

I still assume that the return is going to be really disappointing. They want a hockey trade, and the tone coming out of the organization seems to be preparing the fans to accept pennies on the dollar.

I think if anybody was offering close to fair value like Carolina was, he would be gone by now.

It is worth noting however that Norris is Quinn Hughes’ best friend, so if Rutherford and Allvin are anything like Pierre Dorion, they might have Norris as a prime target to acquire.

Let's not lose sight of the fact that Vancouver is in a major position of weakness.
They have two players that make a lot of money and one of them has to be moved so they should not be expecting and nor will they get a great haul. They will have to take what they can get ( obviously they will be patient and get the best deal they can get).....but think of all of the times in the Sens history or other teams in the leagues history when you have to trade somebody and your hands are tied you usually don't get a great return.

These two players or one of them have issues and they both make a lot of money and in the salary cap era the dollars have to add up or else they will have to retain salary.

Beggars can't be choosers.

It’s similar to Norris’ contract, but without the injury risk. Norris is better defensively, but if Vancouver likes Cozens’ upside I think it makes sense. Buffalo will have to add.

Like @frightenedinmatenum2 mentioned, I don’t think they are going to get a great deal. Buffalo just has a lot to work with so they can build the standard average package that a star player returns.

Imo Vancouver should just trade Miller and call it a day but what do I know. I think they’re going to badly lose any Pettersson deal.

He's the scary part,

Pettersson's producttion took off about half way through the 2020-21 season, scoring at a 97 pts pace for the final 43 games. Before that he was a career 69-80 pts pace guy.

He continued to produce at on average a 101 pts pace until Mar 2 2024, signing his big deal on the 3rd of march. 185 games, 228 pts.

Since signing his deal, he's played at a 60 pts pace. Small sample, only 63 games, but it was like the tap got turned off when he signed that deal.

Now, maybe it's because Miller and him are toxic together. That might be the case. But there's no guarantee that he can find that 100 pts pace player on another team, Huberdeau was a 90+ pts player 4 years running in Florida, been hovering around 55 in Cgy.

Idk, there's a reason Van is taking about Hughes when its Miller and Pettersson that are on the trade block. Hughes is the guy that stirs the drink there, they are more concerned about making sure he's sticking around than the other two.

Huberdeau was almost 30 when he signed with the flames and his first 100 point season. Lots of good metrics are in Petersson favour at both ends of the ice. I would look at a better comparable in the flames turning on MTkachuk only to realize they should have built around him.

Whoever gets Pettersson is getting an excellent player

I don’t have an opinion on this as I don’t watch a ton of Sabres games.

But he’s a 23 year old RS center who put up a ton of points a couple years ago, and he’s playing in Buffalo. I’m sure there are GMs that think they can fix him even if they’re wrong. Detroit was allegedly very interested.

They aren’t gonna get a 2C without warts, so it just comes down to which players they like.

People in here are really underrating Norris. He's turning into a very good defensive centerman, once he's comfortable with his defensive game, he will start putting up more points. That shot isn't going anywhere. Yeah he's overpaid at the moment, but he's missed a lot of time and is having his first healthy season in a while. He could easily get back to being the 30+ goal guy he was, except now he'll also have a great defensive game in addition to that. I know there's injury concerns, but I wouldn't be so quick to trade this guy away, he's a big part of this team.

Pettersson has more upside definitely, but let's not act like Norris isn't currently contributing to the successful season the team has had so far. I doubt the team would be so quick to trade him, even in a Pettersson deal.
