No chance of long term imo. In terms of short term it really depends how he plays next year and for the rest of this year. Very small sample size rn

Joey Daccord got 5x5 (all UFA years) after one very strong season where he played 50 games. So an RFA isn't getting 5M on that kind of term after 20-30.

Gustavsson got 3.75M x 3 after one excellent 39 game season, but again, buys up arb RFA + UFA years.

Kotchetkov on Carolina signed 2M x 4Y with a very strong AHL resume and limited NHL experience. This might be the closest comparable, but Leevi if he plays 20 strong games would have a much stronger NHL resume (plus cap inflation).

I think 2 years is probably the best balance of risk, but I’d consider 3 just for cap management.

Anything else is too much.

I would say next to zero chance of anything beyond 3 years. It doesn't make sense for either side.

2 years makes the most sense to me. We don't have much cap flexibility in the short term.

With that said, the cap is set to explode. So if a young player is willing to extend before we see a big adjustment in cap hits, the risk is going to be lower than usual for the team. A lot of people didn't like the Greig contract, but now that we hear the cap could be close to 100M next season, it looks unlikely that he would have been much cheaper on a shorter term deal.

Greig contract is fine. Its the going rate rn and you are hoping he is more like last year than this year.

I think there is a lot more risk involved in Leevi. Also Ullmark is a vezina goalie so sens should use their leverage to the fullest

With 2 years, he won't be eligible for arbitration. So the rhythm of that deal seems better for Ottawa because I could see them having a better chance of cost controlling him at something workable through the remainder of Ullmark's contract if he doesn't have arbitration to force consecutive 1-2 year deals with.

They could go 4 years, and they would still retain his RFA rights when it expires.

This is definitely a consideration on all signing. I’d imagine expansion begins within 3 years.

If he maintains the current level of play until the end of the season, go multiyear around $2.75. If he starts falling off, try to get a multi year deal at $2 million max. He's still young and as impressive as he's playing, it could be a flash in the pan

I’m thinking 2 year with a two way year 1.

Asking to move Norris and allocating that money for Boeser or Rantanen (+5 million) without first seeing how Norris (a proven 35 goal guy with great 2 way game, young and beloved in locker room) can do on the wing is bananas.

Guys like Norris breakout. The only thing stopping him is more injuries. That's it.

I'd only move Norris for a similar player of his that is more physical and hasn't shown maybe as much like Dylan Cozens.

Tony Deangelo is interesting - RD with offense who’s looking for an NHL return.

Jacques Martin coached him in NYR, so there is a direct tie there. Maybe Jacques didn’t like him because Deangelo was cut the year Jacques was there, but he’d also know best what happened and if Deangelo can be fixed

Interesting because the culture in Ottawa was not strong enoguh 2-3 years ago to bring on a player like this, today the culture and leadership strong enough to keep this kid under wraps

That is a reasonable point. There wouldn't be much benefit to signing him beyond a few years if they might lose him to expansion, since they will never realize the cap savings from a long term deal. (Long term deal = more expensive in early years to save cap in later years).

I think he has the leverage to get 1-way both years if he signs now. What you're describing would be what I'd expect if he never came up. 2-3 years, with a 1-way in the thank year.

If they wait it out, then all bets are off. If he finishes with 20+ games at his current pace, there is zero chance he signs a 2-way.
