We are winning with the roster we have. Why would we want Saad coming in and disrupting that if he is expected to be no more than replacement level player to Perron? It's either a legitimate upgrade for the lineup or nothing, imo. Perron being on the shelf is working for us.

Also, not worth the additional cap next year.

The only way this makes sense is if Joel Hofer as a backup is the centrepiece. I don't know enough about Hofer to know if that's what you're suggesting but if he isn't better than Forsberg there is no sense downgrading there, even if Forsy is out for a few games.

Don't agree with this. There is a clear hole on Stuztle wing and on RD. If you can find a top 6 winger who can play with Stuztle it def fills a hole on the roster.

I personally don't think Perron is the answer he has lost a step and don't think you can have both him and G on the wing for Stuztle with his speed.

I am not sure if Saad is the answer but an upgrade is needed

This trade assumes Forsberg isn't out long term because the Blues will need a backup goalie to replace Hofer. It also assumes David Perron isn't read to return for a while and would welcome the idea of getting traded back to his home state.

Why the Blues do it?
This trade would be more about gaining cap flexibility next year without hurting their roster this year. They move out a player who isn't working for one they are more familiar with in a change of scenery move. They shed 500k from the cap next year. Also, Hofer will be eligible for arbitration, so he will certainly make more than Sogaard's 775k salary. Sogaard clearly is on his way out in Ottawa, and might be an intriguing gamble given his ceiling. I doubt he has much trade value, but I also doubt that Hofer does either. The Blues get Forsberg as a stop-gap to back them up. When you consider that Saad makes an extra 1M in cap over the lifetime of this trade, it's very close to cap for cap (9.75M over 2 years from the Blues for 10.75M over 2 years for Ottawa). You could argue that Ottawa should have to retain a small amount on Forsberg.

Why Ottawa does it?
If Perron is not working out here and would welcome a trade back to St.Louis for family reasons, there is nothing to lose since his contract becomes a sunk cost. Is Saad going to come here and be a great player? Probably not. But due to the unfortunate situation with Perron, he's missed almost the entire season so far, and it might help Ottawa to get someone who is already in mid-season form and ready to go, even if it is Brandon Saad. Sogaard is clearly done and has very little trade value, so swapping him for Hofner is of minimal concern. It gets Ottawa an additional change of scenery in the backup goalie position, and if Sogaard puts it all together and meets his immense potential, he is out west.

Add in something around Zub + Greig for Parayko.

I can't see Parayko coming here, but it wouldn't surprise me if we made the unpopular choice to move Zub out because of how injury prone he has been.

If Weegar is available, he might be a good target. Maybe he would waive to come home.

I don't expect anyone that satisfying in a Zub deal. I doubt he has a lot of trade value with his injury history.

On the topic of the actual proposal, Saad for Perron makes way too much sense if Saad actually wants out. I can't see STL getting much for him with his difficult it is to move out players with money and term who aren't performing. As a base, it makes a lot of sense as a legitimate change of scenery for everybody involved assuming Perron would be open to going back to what I assume is his home state now.

Not entirely true.

He is playing amazing and is a big part of the success. We forget that goalies being good and helping teams win is allowed.

Overall the team is playing much better, though. If we can get more depth scoring then this team will be legit dangerous.

Pinto breoke through, if Greig, Ammadio, Sanderson, etc..can find a groove, that changes things dramatically.

It’s mainly Sanderson/the first pairing honestly.

Everything else has basically improved to at least adequate. But Sanderson generating nothing 5v5 is a hard thing to get past. I don’t see it changing with Hamonic as his partner either, so we basically just have to hope that Zub comes back strong.

No way Staios and Andlauer trade Perron going through the family issues he is. They want to have a human element to their reign; treat people right. No family issues they would make a deal if they felt it would make the team better

That's why I said either a legitimate upgrade to Perron or nothing. Saad is a lateral move.

The need is in the top 6, not a tweener.

Not true. It isn't as flashy but one of the common denominators when this team was winning early in the season and now is how well the bottom 6 is playing.

If it's an in-season trade then it needs to be picking up a defenseman on the cheap who you think can slot into the top 4. Which basically sounds extremely difficult.

If this team can't make the playoffs then that's when you look at changes in the forward group.

Sure but someone has to approach Perron with the concept of packing up and moving to St. Louis. I think they would steer away from it

Perron for Saad would be an upgrade, but management can't move Perron unless Perron decides its the best thing for his family. Don't think management wants to damage their reputation like that
