He’s on pace for 82 points.

If he hits anything over 55, he’s not going to be signed for that little.

I don’t think that’s the case here, Giroux wants to finish his career here I believe. I’m guessing he’s made close to $100 million USD so far and he’s 35, he’s rich enough to make any kind of decision he wants for his happiness and I think he’ll choose to sign for lower salary and leave money on th table to play in his hometown.

his chances of winning a Cup are as good here in Ottawa as anywhere right now and going to Colorado or Dallas won’t be worth the extra money and commitment. He signs here, he can plany 2-4 years here and never move and retire before he has a Grey hair.

Way too premature question but I'm going to ask it-

Hypothetical scenario: It's early march and we are trending into the playoffs. Ullmark has been as advertised and Forsberg is something like 18-7 with 5 shutouts, 2.30 GAA and a .920 sv %. A few teams are out there looking for a contingency plan in net, a couple are desperate. Deadline day rolls around.

What kind of return could we expect and is it good enough to entice us to trade him?

What would also factor in is the cap dump he would represent if we were looking to acquire an impact player.

If we are trending to make the playoffs at the deadline and Forsey post those numbers, we keep him for the playoffs. You never know what can happen in the playoffs. We can’t risk playing Soogard in the playoffs if Ullmark gets injured.

The above scenario only makes sense if we have a Bishop/Lehner/Anderson scenario. Teams need two goalies in today's NHL. It's a tandem league. Ullmark in particular does not have a history of playing a large number of games.

If anything, I bet we try to acquire a third goalie if someone who is waiver exempt is available. We signed Subban, but we need someone who could maybe do spot duty in the NHL. Nobody is likely available now, but maybe closer to the deadline.

Or I could see us swapping Sogaard for another goalie prospect when he returns. Someone with a lower ceiling but is waiver exempt for longer.

At the deadline the question could be less about what Forsberg offers us when on the roster and more about what he offers us if off the roster. There arent many other ways we can create cap space if we haven't accrued in LTIR. So trading Forsberg at the deadline could be our only path to a middle 6 (or D) upgrade should we need it.

I'm not suggesting it's at all cut and dry but it could be a risk worth taking. I would say not if we are a top team, but possibly if we are a 6-8 team.

We don’t have the assets to get a top 6 forward

Cap space isn’t accrued on LTIR.

If you know player is out for the year, then there is some money to be used.

In the context of trade chips, we can't reasonably trade our 1st round pick this year because that puts us in a situation where we have to give up an unprotected 1st to the NHL, and we are also missing our 2026 2nd round pick.

If we are fighting for a playoff spot, I could see us giving up something like a 3rd and/or a B type prospect for a veteran top 9 forward, or a solid veteran to play on the bottom pair. Or, just going bargain hunting for the TDL version of adding Nick Cousins. Someone who has been there before and can be good in the room in a sum of it's parts sort of way, but on their own aren't going to be the difference between where ever our team goes.

No picks, no prospects, no cap. The team seems to be heading in the right direction and too many people are talking like Dorion. Fck that guy did a number on the fanbase too. I wouldn't have believed it.
in terms of prospects we have the following players that lose waiver eligibility for next year

soogard
crookshank
daoust
roos
sebrango

not superstars per say but in terms of what i have seen two nhlers in crookshank/sebrango with soogard being a potential 3rd one. If we are in a playoff spot/near one i expect those pieces to be in play. I am not crazy enough to think they get us something great but i do think they are enough to get us a top 9 forward/3rd pairing dman.

i do agree i dont think we go big game hunting for a rental since we dont have the pieces for it

Not sure any of those pieces get you anything, even a late pick.

They would pass through waivers, every team has those kind of AHL guys.

If they are traded it’s an AHLer for AHLer type deal. Like getting Clark Bishop or Jan Jenik or someone in the past.

I said middle six. A middle six player, say an upgrade on Amadio or Perron (if we deemed it necessary) or as an injury replacement, would cost a third (let's use Joel Armia as an example). We could get a third for Forsberg if we determined that that kind of depth was a priority.

Of course we have the assets for a light TDL pickup.

Giroux will be 37 in January. Yes he's a point a game player this year but it's only been 11 games and in comparison a bunch of guys on the team are lighting it up. ( eg Gaudette is on pace to score 49 goals!
People are downplaying his dramatic lack of scoring in the second half of last season (24points) and believe that he will be a 65 points plus guy for the next 2 years to justify $5 million per over that time. I think his production and performance are going to drop off to the point where he's not worth more than $3 million per year.

If some team that is not in the playoffs but in the hunt is dumb enough to trade us an unprotected 1st rounder or recently drafted 1st rounder that is trending well, I'd trade Forsberg, but aside from that I'm comfortable with the depth that we have

Looking at the roster, what do you see as the weakest points in their roster spot (don't worry about cap just performance)?

Perron as 2LW?
JBD as 3RD?

Forwards are usually getting a million or more for every 10 points in production.

At 3 million per year he’s around a 30 -35 point player.

Hamonic as any RD.

Perron back on the roster will push Gregor to the 4th line and one of Cousins or McEwan out the roster which solves my issue with the 4th line.

I think JBD and Kleven would be the weakest part of the roster, but more accurately the part of the roster that has the most to grow. THey've been getting sheltered minutes but look fine and have every opportunity to earn more ice time.

Perron only played 5 games, and while he didn't get any pts, I though he was doing a lot of things right that went unnoticed. The line of Perron-Pinto-Amadio had great underlying numbers
