Over There
:sens
Jakob Chychrun LHD (4.6M x 1Y)
Jacob Bernard-Docker RHD (805k x 1Y)
2024 117th Overall Pick

:kings
Arthur Kaliyev (RFA, Non-Arb)
Andreas Englund (1M x 1Y)
2024 21st Overall Pick

  • It meets the price of Chychrun or a 1st+2nd, but instead of a 2nd we get Kaliyev, who has ties to Staios from their time in the OHL.
  • LAK does not have many picks this year and does not have a 2nd, so Kaliyev makes sense in place of it.
  • Sens want to move on from JBD. They swap him for Englund. Both are 6th-7th defensemen. Englund adds a physical element that our roster is missing, even if ideally he doesn't play a lot of minutes.
  • LAK would likely demand a pick from Ottawa in order to move their first, because otherwise they would only have 3 picks in this draft.
This is the kind of package where a team could either extend Chychrun, or keep him as a rental until the deadline where they might have the option to recoup something close to that pick if they are out of the playoffs and he is healthy.
Hard pass

Buying out Hamonic is a terrible idea, it costs us more money to buy him out and bring up a replacement guy to sit in the press box in case of emergency than it would to keep him and call up a replacement to play ahead of him in the event of an injury.
Unfortunately just 20 games of Hamonic is way too harmful to our season. He just needs to be off this team, period. He's arguably the worst player in the league (not exaggerating).

We don't have to play him, he's just there in case something happens without enough time to call someone up, so if JBD eats some bad clams for his pregame meal.

His buyout is ~350k. You can easily find someone on a minimum deal ~900k who isn’t a complete anchor. It comes out to a difference of ~150k in total salary which is well worth it.

Worth what? Having someone different in practice and in the press box?

The point is he never needs to see the ice with the exception of rare circumstances where we can't get a callup in place.

We'd be better off using the same money upgrading JBD with someone like Hakanpaa

I'm so sorry Linus.

Who knows, maybe he was playing with a bad knee all of last year? I mean, he wasn't so bad the year before, and he's still "only" 33, so maybe there's a bit of juice left after all?

Best-in-class policy here would be to ban clams altogether then.

Generally throughout the season there’s injuries and even someone who’s a 7th D will get playing time. Imo a ~150k surplus against the cap is worth having an upgrade at that slot.

I wonder if the decision to not buyout Hamonic is about demonstrating to players a culture of respect and taking care of them, not treating them like assets. IE Sens gave him a two year retirement contract with NMC at a lower AAV in good faith, we will honour it, that’s the way this regime will roll.
