Actually most people were complaining we had 5th and 6th Dmen playing top 4 minutes and washed up AHL calibre Dmen playing 5th and 6th. That and a rookie playing 2nd line centre. Who was on the 4th line was way down the list.
Back then it was “it’s just a 3rd round pick” for that 6th d man. Point is some here always find themselves saying “well it’s just this. It’s not that bad”. If you have to say that so often, and our team always sucks ass…I dono. Maybe some correlation

Maybe Hammy ended up being more than worth a 3rd and folks realize that they were wrong about that trade?

Perhaps our team doesn’t actually ’suck ass’?

Its possible that if folks find themselves saying ‘its not that bad’ a while after initially panning a trade, perhaps that’s a good sign?

Just a different twist…

Harmonic won me over. But our team definitely sucks. I mean. Yeah. It’s not good. My point is the same arguments and defence are always said. Instead of “wow amazing deal”

You state we had the most valuable asset you can have entering a rebuild, well I have to disagree, the most valuable asset you can have during a rebuild is dollars from ownership. The Habs picked up Sean Monahan and a 1st by eating 6M dollars while we were throwing draft picks around like candy to get players whose bonuses were paid by the seller. These other rebuild teams were acquiring draft capital for bad contracts while we were spending draft capital to unload contracts since our owner was trying to spend as little as possible. Our team didn’t scout many euro leagues due to keeping scoutings costs low.

Somehow after all the penny pinching and stupid moves by the GM we are in great position.

- Centre ice is set with out top 2 locked up long term

- We have our Power forward and captain locked up long term

-We have a budding star who projects as a 1 under team control for a long while, along with 3 other top 4 D men for the 1st time in a decade.

- We have another scoring winger on a value contract (if he bounces back).

Centre ice and D are the hardest pieces to get and we have them. We just need patience as fans to let our best players get into their primes.

Hopefully our new owner fully funds the team for the next GM because the foundation is fully in place.

- You have a point that ownership plays a role but at the same time, we didn't have to necessarily spend to the cap, only rich teams will do that during their rebuild. Just fill the gaps and tank for high picks a few years. It really went wrong in 2020-21 when we spent 40+ M$ on bad players. I don't think we HAD to spend draft picks on getting players. Could have overpaid some UFAs short term or take overpaid players in trades.

- Also, is it Melnyk that made Dorion trade a 2nd + 3rd + 4th + 7th for dumping Murray and Zaitsev contracts? Did Dorion go after these 2 guys and their contracts because of Melnyk?

- Our Center line (Stutzle, Norris, Pinto, Kastelic + Greig + Ostapchuk) is FANTASTIC. Same with our LD. The 2 MAIN reasons to remain optimistic that we can become a contender

- Brady is also very nice to have, very unique player. Batherson too with his current contract (but only 4 years left now)

You're right that new ownership should fund the team properly going forward as they'll need to take care of their investment. There's reasons for hope and I'll become more positive again in the near future when we start rising more but Dorion makes me anxious, I want someone else to manage the team. I have seen enough and most of the time, I completely disagree with the moves he makes or the way he manages the whole thing, that's all. He's still a good guy but I don't want him as my GM

Well like I said, if cap space does indeed open up, and someone "better" becomes available, we can waive/send MacEwen down and bring that player in as the 13th forward. His salary makes it easy to do so.

How you define "better" is up to you. I bet a lot of people on this board think a guy like Balcers or Gurianov is "better" than MacEwen. If he was the one who had just signed for 775k, no one would've blinked. We would have added "skill". But I bet a lot of GMs would disagree with fans on that assessment.

MacEwen was good enough the be the 13th forward on a good (104pt) Kings team last year. They traded Lemieux and a pick for him. Not sure why he's not good enough to be one here.
I would have asked the same question if we signed a Balcers type to a three year deal before sorting out the DeBrincat situation, the exact same issues I pointed out would exist.

I made it pretty clear I don't see this as a big deal, but I don't see why we did it when we did, or why we gave him three years. To me, this is the type move you might make when you have no cap space to spare, which might end up being the case or it might not, heck, Dorion probably gas a better idea of what the return will be on DeBrincat than any of us, maybe he's already worked out the return and their just crossing the T's and dotting the I'd, might make more sense in a few days, who knows.

When was the last time 2 of the best top 6 options took so long to sign with a team?

I know Tatar and Tarasenko at this point aren’t world beaters but there weren’t many better options available on day 1 if any

It’s pretty interesting

Both of them should just take 1 year deals where they think they'd like to play and push it to next year

I just watched that Valenti show video. It sounds like if Yzerman doesn't get a deal done it will be seen as a failure.
Come on get'r done

My buddies who are Redwings fans are on yzermans case about getting it done. They have an opportunity to get a young 40 goal scorer signed long term and have not much with that ability in the pipeline. Fans are on yzerman hard so it's not just dorion with pressure.

Plus he handed out some very questionable contracts.

I still don't really like the idea of trading Cat to a division/playoff rival but I would be pretty happy if we got a 1st+Berggren.

For sure. I think Berggren is going to fit in well with Ottawa creatively and his vision. Plus he can work his way onto the second line.

Brady-Stu-Tarasanko
Joseph-Norris-Giroux (for face offs like suggested on LOSP)
Berggren-Pinto-Bath
Kelly-Kasty-Macewen

Both sides have a point with macewan - I think he will win people over. Seems like a huge gamer and the price is nice.

Please don't make people laugh. Watson and Kastelic are terrible fighters.

Kastelic is pretty solid, especially at this point in his career. Watson is not a good fighter by any means but at least he can handle guys from time to time. MacEwen, a 4th line player who can't do much other than be physical, hasn't won a fight in over a year.

That's funny.

McEwen won such fights in which Kastelik would have been made into a chop, and Watson with another punching bag.
