Wanner was rated as one of Edmonton's top 10 prospects from a few different sources:
The Athletic ( January 11 - 2025 ):
10. Maximus Wanner, RHD, 21 (Bakersfield Condors)
Wanner had a strong rookie season in the AHL last year, playing top-four minutes (18-19 per game). He has continued to play an important role this season as well, though he hasn’t taken a step per se. He’s very much a part of the picture for the Oilers organization now as they try to build him into a depth defenseman. Wanner’s a 6-foot-3, right-shot D who defends hard and plays a physical, competitive, hard-to-play-against style. He’s a strong athlete who moves well and plays an honest, what-you-see-is-what-you-get game. I thought about ranking him a couple of spots higher here. He’s more of a high-floor, low-ceiling player, though. There isn’t a lot of offense to his game and he projects as more of a third-pairing option or a No. 7/8.

McKeen's Hockey ( September 14 - 2024 ):
Wanner put a year to forget behind him with a very solid freshman campaign in the AHL with Bakersfield. Wanner was limited to only 44 WHL games the previous year after being suspended indefinitely for an off-ice incident. However, his play on the ice has been largely positive, as the former seventh round pick has progressed incredibly well since being selected by Edmonton. The 6-foot-3, right-shot defender brings strong mobility, physicality, and great defensive instincts to the blueline. At the very least, he has excellent defensive upside at the NHL level as more of a steady, stay-at-home type. But he does have some offensive upside built around his ability to get pucks on net and his ability to make quick outlets to start the breakout. With another strong year in Bakersfield, Wanner likely puts himself in the conversation for a roster spot in Edmonton.

Neutral Zone ( October 27 - 2024 ):
6. Max Wanner (D, 6’3″, 196, Moose Jaw Warriors, 03/12/2003)
- Strengths: Strong skater with a physical edge, effective in one-on-one battles. Shows promising puck-moving ability and can make safe, accurate passes.
- Weaknesses: Can be prone to turnovers under pressure; needs to improve decision-making speed.
- Focus: Refining hockey sense under pressure, particularly in defensive-zone exits.
- Potential Role: Bottom-four, shutdown defenseman who can play on the penalty kill.

Daily Faceoff ( July 22 - 2024 ):
7. Max Wanner, RHD, 21 (Bakersfield, AHL)
Acquired: Drafted 212th overall, seventh round in 2021
Many people I’ve talked to are really impressed with Wanner’s progress. He’s primarily a shutdown defenseman, but scoring seven goals as a rookie defenseman who has never been too offensively inclined is quite solid. He’s big and mobile and has already played significant minutes despite being one of the youngest players on the Condors. I expect him to play at least another year in Bakersfield, but I think he could step into some NHL games this year without being a liability. The fact many think he could go from being a seventh-rounder to an impact NHLer shows how far he has come in his development.
