Prospect Info: Frank Vatrano

Scored 4 goals today for Providence. 5 goals in 2 games on 11 shots.

Sweeney better announce by tomorrow that he's called up. Spectacular talent.

 Apparently you don't know how this works... any injury to any player in the top 9 just means an immediate promotion for Kelly (you can just imagine the fist pumps from Julien).

(fwiw: I thought Kelly had a really good game yesterday but needs to be a 4th line C only at this point).

Right now, Vatrano has more regular season goals than the Boston Bruins.

This is what Clode SHOULD be saying to Sweeney:

I thought Vatrano looked good in the preseason. I wasn't surprised to see that he got put back in Providence, but I think he deserves a shot. That said, the only issue is if he's ready to go for two games in <24 hours, especially RIGHT at the start of the season. (Plus Friday's Providence game.) That's a heavy load right at the start of the season, especially when you haven't prepped for it.

But good on Vatrano for the mega-hatty in Providence.

Not trying to start a brush fire here, but how does he compare to our old fried Matt Fraiser who we are all too familiar with: Great shot, below average wheels, and not enough size to establish himself in front?

Calling Fraser's skating 'below average' is being kind....Im not sure he could even pivot both ways.

A number of kids could do the job. Koko, Griffith, Ferlin, this kid. It has to be one of them, surely we won't stick with Talbot, Kelly, Kemp, etc.

Might as well bring back Paille.

Vatrano looks awesome in providence, but I would give him more than just two games before becoming hell bent to call him up.

Leave the kid down there. Let him do his work and pile on the goals if they come. The AHL and NHL are different animals. Let him ride the highs of this game and build on it.

I agree with those that are saying let the kid play a few more games and develop his skills and confidence more. He's certainly one to watch right now. The way he carries his size reminds me a little bit of Andrei " The Tank " Kovalenko.

I do wish both Kelly and Talbot were gone yesterday though.

Mature sounding kid. Good interview. Koko, Czarnik and Vatrano line is clicking

This is good to hear, Would be nice if Koko could establish himself as a good winger as well as center. I think it's great to get these guys some time to gel and develop in Providence. I also think Kelley is only going to help Spoons out defensively while he takes that spot on the line, taking a little responsibility from Spooner.

Irwin played at UMass, did you get to see him?

I got to see both Vatrano and Irwin, but I honestly don't remember anything specific about Irwin other than him being solid, moved well, big shot. I was a little surprised, but happy (I am a UMass alum) when he turned up in the NHL and I rooted for him.

That being said, I thought Irwin looked as bad as a player could through two games and was not surprised at him being waived.

As far as Vatrano goes, wouldn't mind seeing him for a game in Marchand's spot, but not sure he's ready for a full time job in the NHL. Would be surprised if we saw him today in Boston.

Let him hopefully score a bunch of goals in the AHL and gain experience against seasoned pros before he comes up.

they'd have to waive another player to call him (or another player) up, unless they put Marchand or IR, correct?

Call him up. So far he is great in AHL and Bruins are in a desperate need of goals, so who knows, maybe he could score in NHL as well.
It can't get any worse for Bruins anyway.

can we keep waiving talbot

I think we can send Talbot to Providence for a month (or, rather, a month since he cleared), and he's immune to waivers. After that, he has to clear again.

That was probably the strategy Sweeney used. Clear him now when teams don't need him. Later in the season, this year's standings will be used to determine waiver priority; you could also do it early to make sure a waived player goes to one team (say, Edmonton) instead of another (say, Pittsburgh) if Pittsburgh looks like it may drop below Edmonton in the near future and you don't want your waived player in Pittsburgh.

Right now, last year's standings are used for the first month or so - thus, the standings are static.

Informative, didn't know about any of this.
