Canada always does this. They always do the whole "we are the smartest in the room and when it pays off they'll thank us" type of thing. You can go back to 1972 with this sort of thinking with Canada. How much talent did we leave off of that team? Our WHA guys including Hull, guys like Lemaire, maybe Keon, etc. Too many guys picked on different teams because it was supposed to be a cake walk. Now, I'll give them credit, this was the first of its kind and they probably thought they could do it this way and agree to let everyone play at least twice because it was supposed to be easy. But after Game 1 those rules went out the window. Since 1972 there is no excuse to not pick the right teams. But in the 1980s we had that same "too many Chiefs not enough indians" approach where everyone picking the team wanted to be the hero and pick "their" guy. A lot of struggle that went back and forth I am sure. Mike Keenan won both of the Canada Cups he coached, but if we lost there would be tons of hand wringing as to who he left off.
Rob Zamuner, Kris Draper, Kirk Maltby (no, seriously), Lyle Odelein (no seriously), Sylvain Cote (you can't make this up), Ron Duguay, Shayne Corson, Todd Bertuzzi among others have been picked for Team Canada when there were far better players to choose from. Bennet, Cirelli and Jarvis all have their roles, but I don't see why all three needed to be there. Bennett did have two postseasons where he played well the last couple of years, but this is a short tournament, not a marathon. I'd want Bennett on my team if I am trying to win the Cup, but a week long tourney? Cirelli too, and he's never had Bennett's postseasons. Jarvis has got to be someone's preference. I know people think Bouchard could be a defensive liability but that shot and that offense from the back end could come in handy. You are putting a lot of eggs in one basket with Makar.
