Sports can be cruel. Matthews comfortably outplayed McDavid in this game. Made key plays on the two US goals, engaged and productive all night, had multiple chances to end it in OT, while #97 struggled for impact, couldn't find his customary space, allowed a couple of bad turnovers and by his own admission was "not very good". But he got open and the puck found him at the right time, Matthews lost his man, McDavid put it in the net, and that was that. And that's what everyone will remember. Harsh, but that's the way it goes.
I think what sucks the most is:
-Beat Canada in round robin
-Finished round robin in first, with 6 points to their 5
-were dominating OT yet they manage to score the GWG
-foiled by Binnington on our ice.. again. Maddening.

But whatever. Back to watching the Bruins struggle for mediocrity Saturday.

WTG Canada - to those who think Canadians are arrogant, I thought I may as well have some fun! Which is the Freebird? Maybe tone down the arrogance yourselves. Most fans here were fair but some were just over the top obnoxious.

Nice but it's a crap tournament with 4 nations only and both finland and Sweden get the wrong end of the stick playing on the road and not even having one game in their homeland in Helsinki and Stockholm. What stupidity.
I agree that other countries should have been included, but it feels good to win. It is a shame Pasta didn't get to play but after the injuries, maybe just as well.

"Crap" tournament is a bit harsh but it sure pulled in hockey fans, so I disagree on that part. It was a lot more fun than I thought it would be. I was very disengaged at the beginning but felt a lot of passion and excitement after the first Canada US game.

Ultimately I think the American's are deeper, but Canada still has the best two forwards and best D-man on planet earth. The bottom 3rd of either teams roster could be immediately replaced with a different 8-9 players and it wouldn't really matter, in a best-on-best scenario it's your horses that get you there. All this talk about this guy in, that guy out next time on the fringes of the roster doesn't really matter.

American's best D-man (and arguably best player) is Quinn Hughes and he couldn't play. The best American forward on planet earth is still Auston Matthews but he's playing at less than 100% and has basically been playing injured all season. Matthew Tkachuk being unable to play really last night was a big loss.

Canada had the horses, by the time we get to last night championship game USA really didn't. And give Canada credit for choosing and sticking with Binnington.

Weird take. Are the Olympics going to be stupid too because teams can't play at home?

It was a good tournament and good games by all.

Even though Mathews actually showed up in a big game, no doubt greatly helped by playing with the likes of Brady T, the bottom line is he once again has shown that he dosen't have that clutch gene in him. Fortunately for him he is still fairly young and will have many more opportunities to change that narrative.

Come Olympics, I'd be going with this line up:
Bedard-McDavid-Marner
Marchand-MacKinnon-Crosby
Point-Scheifele-Reinhart
Stone-Bennett-Wilson
Huberdeau/Celebrini

Makar-Toews
Morrisey-Parayko
Theodore-Doughty
Sanheim/Harley

Thompson
Binnington
Hill

Saw a ton of Canadian fans really giving it to Binnington during this tournament. Man did he come through when Canada needed him.

Whomever the US coach is for the Olympics, hopefully Sullivan, they should show McDavid being left alone out front. Play it over and over again before the 1st practice.

Great game last night.
It is Sullivan. The coaching staff will be back. The only change I can see is Guerin getting the boot.
