Thursday’s game gets more and more interesting by the hour.
I'll just say this here, even if it get's me in trouble. Seems appropo now.
I had said this before, but it's really fascinating how much the sentiment towards solitude went out the window after Trump won. All I saw from people on X, Facebook, etc, was that the U.S should stop getting involved with foreign governments and that the focus should be improving things at home first, which I agree with as well. However, once Greenland, Gaza, and Canada were said to be on the table, the same people are suddenly OK with upending foreign government's sovereignty for the possibility of gain; basically, the same military complex that was criticized during the Bush, Obama, and Biden presidencies is suddenly ok again.
I know the response to Trump's rhetoric is to say he is joking and that's it's a negotiating tactic. However, being a joke or not, it's a costly one to make, as it seemed to have sewered national trust in each country. Both countries' citizens are now boycotting each other's products and tariffs will have noticeable consequences sooner rather than later if they continue.
I do try and be as fair as I can, as I do like SOME of the things their admin is doing. Ultimately, however, where it hurts most will be people's wallets and that's not going to be something that everyone will overlook for the sake of the possibility, not the certainty, the POSSIBILITY that they will overtake Canada. I am not even sure how many people would even be ready for the cost of doing such a monumental takeover of an entire country like Canada, would Americans be ok with possibly being in massive debt, beyond even what they have now, in order to do such a thing? Already many places in America are very expensive and is possibly the reason why Trump was elected in the first place.
In any case, I love America and love Canada. This is my home however and I would rather us fix this place ourselves, not consolidate power into more singular world entities. The gravy train will end in America at some point and I don't want to be part of that once it happens.
