I think its pretty clear mcdavid doesnt care about the regular season anymore.

I don't think it's that he doesn't care necessarily but I do think it's a case of him conserving energy somewhat, similar to what Draisaitl did for the past years prior to this one when he was getting criticized for being lazy during the regular season then was shot out of a cannon in the playoffs.
