We could have a pairing of Hughes and MacAvoy right now if Benning wasn't a complete moron.

I loved that everyone calling for too many men last night.

Is the rule not that the team with too many has to touch the puck unless it's blatantly obvious they've been playing with 6 for like a while? I thought that was the rule but I don't really like rules.

I don't think so - the American forward (I think it was Miller) threw it purposely towards the Canadian bench because he knew they were in the middle of changing. It's something that happens all the time and the main reason teams get caught for too many men.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but they don't have to have possession of the puck to get the penalty called against them - if it touches anyone, if they make a play for it and miss, or if the amount of players is really obvious (2 or 3 over instead of just 1) it greatly increases the chances of getting nailed for it.

For all the crap Marner takes for being soft, including from me, he scores the OT winner vs SWE and grabs two primary assists in the Finals.

Seeing him move the needle is a good reminder that you don’t need to finish checks and throw hits to make a huge difference.

This kind of shows me that we may want to stop trying to turn Pettersson into a tough guy and instead focus on getting him back to his skill game.
Marner was excellent in the biggest game of his pro career.

I agree with your lesson. Let a skilled guy play his game and play him with players that maximize it.

went to pub with freinds to watch it. edge of your seat. i called mcdavid winning it. or even marchand. that was fun. binninton cameup huge
There a lot of Canadian apologies owed to Binnington today. He stole that game for Canada.

I really am not sure, Scooter. I think in that situation, the Canadian players would have had to touched it, but they all wisely did not.

I'm sure 87 was screaming on the bench not to touch it. That was the biggest difference between Canada and US. Canada knew what they could get away with. The US still doesn't understand the game as well as Canadians, that's my take but I haven't read one rulesbook or instructional manual in my life.

Most of Canada hates him too.
Those Trudeau tweets were from the top rope. Absolute chefs kiss.

He's also actually standing up for Canada. The other party leaders have been strangely silent on a topic as impactful as Canada's economic welfare and...y'know, sovereignty.

I feel sorry for Wayne, I bet he was really looking forward to that trip to the White House
Absolute disgrace they trotted out Wayne as the "honorary captain". When they asked him to participate in the ceremony he probably thought he would giving a MAGA banner to team USA.

Alberta's Premier openly supports Trump.

now that my nationalistic fervour has calmed down a bit, lol, some thoughts on the game:

marner gets so much hate, but it was clear he should be with mcdavid over stone. great player, he's still a legit top-6 guy at this level. canada's mason raymond.

binnington - f***in eh. saw something on twitter of how hellebyuck is crazy good but not that clutch, while binner is crazy, not that good, but incredibly clutch. nice to be on the right side of that lmao

mackinnon is such a monster, it's actually terrifying. i've always been a doubter but he really does have that kobe/mj sociopath switch to him. mcdavid is more talented but doesn't have that.

was sam reinhart playing in this game? bennett on the other hand was a beast.

credit where credit is due to makar - he was terrific. devon toews is a lot better than i would've thought he would've been in this setting.

on the us side, slavin is so f***ing good. still somehow the most underrated player in the league. thought he was the best player on the ice heading into OT. brady and matthews both had great games - matthews will be remembered for the lost coverage on connor in ot, but he was their best forward by a long shot. guentzel was very good, krieder was bad. yes their d should be a lot better next year with mcavoy and quinn healthy, but i'd also be worried about up front where they can bring up connor and robertson. not to drance it, but they are still the favorites for the olympics.

takeaway for 2026 - idk if marchand, stone, pietro and doughty can all be on the team. someone said it earlier, you absolutely need those guys to keep guys like harley (wow, what a revelation) and jarvis composed. but the speed and size of the US was evident against those guys. i'd rather see cirelli/hagel back, even though they were a notch below talent wise. the bulk of the roster now has championship pedigree in a best-on-best environment.

point - mcdavid - marner
crosby - mackinnon - reinhart
bennett - scheifele - konecny
hagel - cirelli - jarvis
hyman/celebrini/stone

toews - makar
morrissey - weegar
harley - parayko
theodore/bouchard

Ovechkin is married into Putin's circle and even helped recruit kids along with other Russian celebs into his politics. He chose that road and it helps provide Putin faux-legitimacy (i.e. his ridiculous PR hockey games).

Still, Gretzky acts even more ridiculous because he has zero reason to ever lick Trump's nuts aside from billionaire class conscience.
Can say the same for all of those Billionaires as well.
Bad call by team Canada brass to have Wayne as the choice. When he doesn't say anything to douse the mention by Trump of Wayne for Governor of Canada, that should have been the moment where Canada brass said, ok, we can't call on him.

Hey now...as someone that transplanted there, you're not entirely wrong.

There are a lot of us who moved here under NDP rule who thought there was no chance Danielle Smith would get elected. And then she did. Things have been pretty brutal since.

I’m sorry scooter, I didn’t know you moved.

I actually always wanted to move to Calgary or thereabouts. The city doesn’t agree with ol Rev. The woods is where I need to be.

I’m looking at the OK Nicola area. I need o be somewhere with a f***ing hockey team. Or at least driving distance to some rink.

Sure, I don't find him innocent in this, but I can see the plausible deniability: "If I don't do this, my family/parents will be harmed".

There's even a defense that, growing up in a culture like that, he's not going to know any other way. Americans supporting Trump is a choice, Russians supporting Putin is an instruction.

I’m definitely one of the ones that owes Binnington an apology. Did not think he was the right call at all - but honestly, I know McDavid got the Golden Goal and player of the game was never going to go to anyone else - I thought Binnington was our player of the game last night. Made several five alarm stops to allow McDavid to bring it home.

So I’ll happily eat my crow on this one. Well done, Binnington.

The best part about the win, for me, had nothing to do with politics, nationalism, patriotism, or anything else. It was sharing the game and win with my 5 year old son. He's got very deep into watching and playing hockey with me. We were shooting a ball around while watching the 1st period. We missed the first 5 minutes of the 3rd while I read him books but then we snuggled in my bed and watched the rest of the game on my phone. He's too young to understand anything other than who we are cheering for and he wants to spend the time with me.

Sharing that moment with him was special. Nothing else matters.

I don't like him, but I'll admit him standing up to Trump is unifying people, which is what a leader should do in times like this.
We are in this mess due in a large part to his efforts over the last 9 years. The most divisive, corrupt, scandal ridden, inept reign of a PM in many years. A few tweets won’t undo the damage he has done to this country.

Beautiful story.

Some of my best memories with my dad are enjoying a sport(s) moment together. We don't talk about feelings-y stuff much, but sitting down to watch a game together is how we show love and want to spend time together.

I deeply, deeply hope the Canucks can pull out a Cup in his lifetime. I would pay literally any monetary price to go to that game with him.

I was at game 7 against the Bruins with my Dad. Real monkey's paw situation that one was.

That's what it's all about. The patriotism was great, but Canada has its own problems we need to talk about in a productive way.

But if there is one salvation in all sport, it's the feeling when you were a kid and still had some mysticism to offer the world. Then you become an adult and it's just replaced by cynicism, but the rules of life are the same. Whatever you are looking for, you'll probably find. And you may not like it. But whatever it is, it's out there.

My oldest was working last night, he was so choked. My nephew and I drove down in each intermission and after the win to update him.

My nephew was in Kitimat for the first time in 8 years. We watched the Golden Goal when he was a toddler, and we watched this one last night. My youngest, who cares little for hockey, joined in for the celebration at the end.

First photo shows me and my nephew celebrating Crosby’s Golden Goal in 2010, and McDavid’s in 2025. Second photo was us getting a photo with my oldest at work. And third is my youngest joining the celebrating.

Memories for sure.

Akim Aliu has had some passionate (and sometimes overboard) responses online before, but his lambasting of PK Subban was spot on. For those who didn't see, he put up a post on X hyping up Trump's potential attendance at the game.

That f***ing guy has only ever cared about PK Subban being the center of attention everywhere he goes. I remember when he incited a witch hunt against the poor kid who did a "gorilla pose" towards Jordan in the ECHL, which was later shown to be a tough guy mimic a la Tom Wilson. The kid's reputation was destroyed and PK never said a goddamn word about it afterwards.

He's a snake, and multiple ex-teammates have gone on record stating exactly that.

I dont know how to embed tweets but if someone wants to post the BR Open Ice tweet they just posted of coach Coop...

Absolute bloody chills.

"Somebody be selfish and shoot it in the net!"

"McDavid with Marner"

Snipe seconds later.
