But I think he'd help the team in some much-needed ways, and he might want to re-sign. Pens would have room to add him if they dealt Zucker and let Rust go in UFA.

I find it difficult to believe that a competititive team sells off their best player because he is a pending UFA

Forsberg isn’t their best player that’s probably why you feel that way. Maybe their best forward, but his last few years have been injury after injury on routine plays and he’s basically hinted that he’s going to UFA.
