That was his reason for stepping down, but I think his move to Detroit is open for speculation. I didn’t watch the presser announcing him as their GM

Probably. Also might be like when he fired Boucher. I haven't followed closely enough to know if the team quit on Lelonde.

DRW barely fire guys mid-season (years of success had something to do with it).

It's weird that when we're focusing so much on the analytical side of the game, the coaches who make all of that work don't seem to get the same look.

Detroit is like Buffalo. Sure, they could hire Gerard Gallant (who played for the Wings), and he might be able to do something with them in a year or two, but what happens when his methods have worn out their welcome? What real coaching development pipeline has been set up?

They could just never get a real centerpiece there. I think the mistake was betting Dylan Larkin could be that guy, rather than moving him for the tank.

That was more the reasons he stepped down here and took a backseat role to JBB. Him taking the job in Detroit is up for speculation and assumptions honestly.

Detroit missing on Lafreniere really hurt them. You also need to be conscious of *WHERE* you are at in your rebuilding. Ask yourself if you'd rather be the Sharks with Celebrini, Smith, Eklund and smart enough to trade for Askarov needing only a defender to finish the collection.

Or do you wanna be the Wings starting with Seider, Raymond (not a bad start) and just saying "f*** it the build is over" and completely missing your chance on Bedard when you know damn well SFY is getting over 5 years to do this and you have Kasper and Edvinsson.

These guys were content to pick as high as 8, 9 and 15 WAAAAAYYYYYY too prematurely in the process

The Sharks haven't done anything. They look promising, but that's all.

But what's the process of coming out of a rebuild? It's apparently not (or not just) to amass talent. Detroit getting some later picks right would have helped them out there, too.

There seemed to be a theory that a team could develop, and they'd gradually turn the expectations up. That doesn't seem to work.

Lafreniere isn't that good, Raymond is much better at current moment. Wings really didn't miss out there, Lafreniere hasn't proven he can drive his own line for more than a 20 game stretch so far in his career and become a 70-80 points+ winger.

Yzerman's 1st round picks have been very solid for the most part in Detroit, unlike his 1st rounders in Tampa. His 2nd-7th round picks, run mostly by Kris Draper, have been underwhelming at best so far. Sure, Buchelnikov, Mazur, and Lombardi could be something, but guys like Tuomisto, Mastrosimone, Niederbach, Hanas, Grewe, Viro, (likely James too) missing completely is horrific. And no guarantees that Wallinder, Johansson, & Buium are anything more than decent defensive depth that don't move the needle.

The Sharks are too early in the build to turn it around. Next year probably. Right now if I am Grier, I let it roll. Be content to pick like 3rd or 4th and take the number 1 defender. Or you trade out for said defender on another team. Promise is the currency of hope and the Sharks are richer than everyone.

I don't want to make a scene out of criticizing Yzerman but he has handled the Red Wing rebuild about as stupidly as you can. He has loaded that team up as many times as he can to keep them from hitting the bottom and thus the best possible talent constantly eludes them

He has about 2 more years after this of sludging through mediocrity and he is gonna get unceremoniously shit canned the same way Kevyn Adams is going to in Buffalo.

The team he is building is eerily reminiscent of those 2010 Magic teams led by Aaron Gordon and Nik Vucivic. The best they can hope for is .500 and getting bitch slapped in round 1

Oh yeah. They couldn't wait to get rid of him. But you're right about this and I don't know if this is him taking the right step to rectify years of being a bozo or if the bozo gene went nuclear. The Canucks straight up traded their captain to make Miller happy and gave captaincy to Hughes.

IIRC, Miller was a bit of a partier who didn't take things that seriously in New York, hindering him from hitting his full potential there. He was elite with Kucherov and Stamkos in 2017-18 to end that season, before they went a bit cold during the 2018 Playoffs. He was good in a depth role in 2018-19, and we didn't have the cap room to keep him, thus trading him to Vancouver for a 1st.

Miller has never fit the hockey cliches, pucks in deep stereotype of personality. He's pretty old school, abrasive, is willing to speak his mind. Not surprising to me that an old school Yinzer isn't getting along with Pettersson and likely others.
