Forget Gretzky...Records that will never be beat

  • We sincerely apologize for the extended downtime. Our hosting provider, XenForo Cloud, encountered a major issue with their backup system, which unfortunately resulted in the loss of some critical data from the past year.

    What This Means for You:

    • If you created an account after March 2024, it no longer exists. You will need to sign up again to access the forum.
    • If you registered before March 2024 but changed your email, username, or password in the past year, those changes were lost. You’ll need to update your account details manually once you're logged in.
    • Threads and posts created within the last year have been restored.

Our team is working with Xenforo Cloud to recover data using backups, sitemaps, and other available resources. We know this is frustrating, and we deeply regret the impact on our community. We are taking steps with Xenforo Cloud to ensure this never happens again. This is work in progress. Thank you for your patience and support as we work through this.

Ovechkin's 900-whatever goals is gonna be hard to beat.

The guy played most of his career in a dead puck league and he's still gonna flirt with four digits.

Who else is gonna do that?

I know they probably said that about Gretzky but Ovechkin is truly special. I don't think we're ever gonna see that mix of talent, size, longevity, and relative good health again.

Mario's 5 goals 5 different ways. If even the Great One didn't do it, I doubt anyone else ever will.

It's definitely beatable. Crosby almost did so in 4 goals on 11/27/2010. He had an even strength, power play, and a short handed empty netter goal in that game. He also had a penalty shot in that game but was robbed by Kiprusoff.

Not discounting the absurdity of his goal record, but the dead puck era ended with the lockout and when 8/87 joined the league. To say most of his career was in a dead puck league seems inaccurate.

If Matthews wasn't stuck with the injury bug then he'd have a chance.

But since he seems to unfortunately be stuck with injury plagued seasons now and then I dont see anyone coming close, even with league wide offence at a high level.

That's what has always been said for some reason, but it's not what the numbers say, Scoring in 2015-16 was marginally higher than scoring in 2001-02. Scoring in 2007-08 was actually lower than it was in 2000-01.

Scoring exploded in 2005-06 and then just went right back to where it was. The DPE low-key lasted 20 years ignoring that blip.

Bobby Orr 6 straight 100+ pt seasons and 2 seasons at 135+ pts as a D simply won't be broken. Hard to see anyone coming close, even if league wide scoring goes up quite a bit. Crazy to think how many records Orr could have put out of reach had he had a healthy full career.

Tim Kerr's single season powerplay record with 34 goals was looking like it could be falling soon. But powerplays are down this season. Could still stand for a long time.

Patrik Laine scored 5 goals with 5 shots in one NHL game in 2018.
Laine actually broke a Gretzky record by putting up at least a point every opening night for 8 seasons straight. Gretzky scored a point during his first 7 seasons, but was pointless to start his 8th. Now Laine missed the opening night for his 9th season, but did put up a point when he made his debut in december.

Henri Richard's 11 Stanley Cups as a player.

Larry Robinson's and Nicklas Lidstrom 20 straight seasons with appearances in playoffs

Merci Bonsoir.
It's really impressive, but greatly helped by the small amount of teams in the league at that time. That's the main reason it'll never be broken.

Another record of his, if I'm not mistaken, is that he won 5 consecutive Cups... with the same team. You'll never see that again.

Talking about team records:
"The Philadelphia Flyers set a dubious and embarrassing record during the 2018-19 season. They became the first team in NHL history to use eight different goalies in one season."

The one thing we are good at, using a lot of different goalies! 💪

Senators have used 7 twice since that year, I could see that one being broken.

It is however accurate to say that Ovi and Crosby played in almost identical time periods to the DPE. Look at the 7 year period of the DPE vs. 2011 to 2017. No difference (<1%).
