Forget Gretzky...Records that will never be beat

  • We sincerely apologize for the extended downtime. Our hosting provider, XenForo Cloud, encountered a major issue with their backup system, which unfortunately resulted in the loss of some critical data from the past year.

    What This Means for You:

    • If you created an account after March 2024, it no longer exists. You will need to sign up again to access the forum.
    • If you registered before March 2024 but changed your email, username, or password in the past year, those changes were lost. You’ll need to update your account details manually once you're logged in.
    • Threads and posts created within the last year have been restored.

Our team is working with Xenforo Cloud to recover data using backups, sitemaps, and other available resources. We know this is frustrating, and we deeply regret the impact on our community. We are taking steps with Xenforo Cloud to ensure this never happens again. This is work in progress. Thank you for your patience and support as we work through this.

In the meantime, feel free to join our Discord Server

Everyone always talks about Gretzky's records and they will never be beat(until now) but how about two other records that I can 100% guarantee no one will ever beat?

Tiger Williams 3971 Penalty minutes all-time
Dave Schutz 472 penalty minutes in a single season

Is it safe to say these will never be beat? Is there even a point to talk about it? Perhaps dubious records but these two are a lock to never be beat.

Glenn Hall started and completed 502 consecutive regular-season games.
Only way this could be broken is to reduce the regular season into something like 50 games, so that one goalie could play the entire season even in theory. Then you'd need to have a good enough goalie worth playing a full season, and then repeat that 10 times. Not gonna happen.

Except those wouldn't be very hard to beat? Just infract every time you go onto the ice.

Those aren't even real records. Real records benefit the team. Being bad isn't a record.

Orrs defensive scoring record 139 points as a D

Brodeurs shutout record 125

Haseks Vezina haul (6) and career #s save pct .922 GAA 2.20

Lidstroms 7 Norris trophies

Gretzky's 50 in 39 and 92 goal in a season

There's some insane records set since just the 70s that in the modern era are deemed untouchable but going further back as people pointed out, there's others that are so insane to think about that it's just not even considerable based on today's game and player management

Even hitting 10% of that now would be a big story.

We took a dive into this in the HoH goalie project. It's a very cool record, but ultimately didn't help the team. The Blackhawks lacked depth and Hall was frequently exhausted come playoff time. While contemporaries were given (small) breaks he played every game on a team that offered little support.

There's some decent correlation to guys struggling in the playoffs in their workhorse years (Roy, Hellebucyk, Belfour) while playing stronger hockey when given a break.

That's kind of the point. No player these days would ever be allowed to come close to harming their team that consistently for a long enough time to approach those totals.
