Good, hope he gets humiliated. He has been a humiliation for this franchise for 6 years.
I would agree. Better to send the guy home that do that. Sends bad vibes among the other players. NYG in free agency battle high taxes and the worst playing surface in the NFL.
You don't have to cut him, just send him home ala Raiders and Carr (though that was just 2 weeks vs 7 weeks). You can still decide in March whether to make him a pre or post June 1 cut and whether you want to eat the remaining $22 mill in dead cap all in 2025 or spread it over at $11 mill per in 2025 and 2026.
should also say, his $47 mill cap charge for 2024 will still count regardless if he's cut, sent home, etc. as that was fully guaranteed. He knows he's getting cut before $12 mill of his 2025 base salary becomes guaranteed by day 5 of the new league year in March.

They can waive jones but, he would go unclaimed. Once cut he could then sign a new deal with a club and offset the very small contract he would get against whatever remaining is there against his $47 mill cap hit (minimal savings).
His 2025 base salary was guaranteed so the giants will eat that along with the signing bonus and restructure of his deal in 2023. Which leaves $22 mill of dead cap to still hit the books after this season.
There is no getting around it.

I believe a couple of things regarding next year might need to be addressed. Not saying it is impossible but I do believe it would take some work. I really respect DJ as a hard worker and good guy. I would be happy for him if he was released this week and a playoff team picked him up as backup insurance.
If he was released he wouldn’t be claimed meaning another team would not pick up the remainder of his contract. If he was cut he would likely only get the veteran minimum of like $400-$500k for the balance of this season. So minimal offset to the $47 mill of cap charges this season for the giants on jones.
That still leaves $18 mill of prorated signing bonus plus $4.2 mill of restructure left to hit the cap for the giants moving forward. Cutting him now, means that they eat all $22 mill in 2025. Having him on the roster still allows them the option to make him a post June 1 cut which allows them to spread the dead cap charge over 2025 and 2026 which I believe is $11 mill per season.

If there are no other details I wish they would release him now. I hope that is the case but based on some other things I wonder if there are other details that would need to be worked out. Would be awesome to see a playoff contender pick DJ up as a backup. Especially in a city where he has former teammates.
Not sure the giants want to commit to eating all of the $22 mill dead cap in 2025 by cutting him now. Would be the main reason to not cut him right now. At worst they should shut him down and not risk the very small chance he hurts himself in practice.

They usually do not split the cap hit by waiting till June 1. They usually do it upfront. Schoen has made a point of that in the past. Also if you wait till after June 1 you do not have the cap room until after June 1 when most the best UFA have already been signed.
I don’t think you can do the split between 25/26 right now. May need to wait til the start of the new league year in March to make that declaration. You can release the player in March/April but designate the player as a post June release.
A straight cut right now will make all of the $22 mill dead cap count in 2025.
Who knows whether Schoen is the GM who gets to make that decision or not. Or if someone else will be hired to make that call.
Giants are going to take a big cap hit but they might be able to move DJ for a mid to late round pick in the offseason. He is still an NFL calliber player unlike Zach.

Depends on if there are any contract cap repercussions. Last season fans said nobody would trade for Zach Wilson.
Lets not forget DJ has won NFC player of the week 3 times. He also set a NFL playoff record. If a team needs a backup I do not see any reason they would not trade a #7 pick if there weren't any cap repercussions.
I think that is best. I'm glad DJ asked out. I hope he gets picked up by somebody even though the season is almost over.

On a side note: Rex Ryan wants to coach the Jets again. I say hell yeah! If we are still going to suck at least have an entertaining coach.

I'm not sure if I'll get in trouble over this. But the media's narrative that the Giants are a racist organization because they didn't draft Dwayne Haskins (and never had a black QB start other than Geno for one game) was a disgrace. RIP, but Haskins was worse than Jones. And this narrative has been carried for years where players around the league f***ing hated Jones. The amount of animosity and venom spewed his way I've never seen in any player by other players in the NFL. Far worse players didn't get the treatment Jones got. He sucked but every other game opponents taking potshots at him was a disgrace. And it started with the narrative of him being picked because he was white, which was a dumb f***ing narrative to begin with.
