I would agree. Better to send the guy home that do that. Sends bad vibes among the other players. NYG in free agency battle high taxes and the worst playing surface in the NFL.

You don't have to cut him, just send him home ala Raiders and Carr (though that was just 2 weeks vs 7 weeks). You can still decide in March whether to make him a pre or post June 1 cut and whether you want to eat the remaining $22 mill in dead cap all in 2025 or spread it over at $11 mill per in 2025 and 2026.

should also say, his $47 mill cap charge for 2024 will still count regardless if he's cut, sent home, etc. as that was fully guaranteed. He knows he's getting cut before $12 mill of his 2025 base salary becomes guaranteed by day 5 of the new league year in March.

Also, we have seen players get hurt in practice (non contact injury), so that's also another reason to just send him home and not take any chances.

In a perfect world it would be nice if they could work out a fair contract settlement now and release DJ now so DJ could possibly sign on with a playoff team that may need a backup.

They can waive jones but, he would go unclaimed. Once cut he could then sign a new deal with a club and offset the very small contract he would get against whatever remaining is there against his $47 mill cap hit (minimal savings).

His 2025 base salary was guaranteed so the giants will eat that along with the signing bonus and restructure of his deal in 2023. Which leaves $22 mill of dead cap to still hit the books after this season.

There is no getting around it.

I believe a couple of things regarding next year might need to be addressed. Not saying it is impossible but I do believe it would take some work. I really respect DJ as a hard worker and good guy. I would be happy for him if he was released this week and a playoff team picked him up as backup insurance.

If he was cut he would likely only get the veteran minimum of like $400-$500k for the balance of this season. So minimal offset to the $47 mill of cap charges this season for the giants on jones.

If there are no other details I wish they would release him now. I hope that is the case but based on some other things I wonder if there are other details that would need to be worked out. Not sure the giants want to commit to eating all of the $22 mill dead cap in 2025 by cutting him now. Would be the main reason to not cut him right now. At worst they should shut him down and not risk the very small chance he hurts himself in practice.

They usually do not split the cap hit by waiting till June 1. They usually do it upfront. Schoen has made a point of that in the past. Also if you wait till after June 1 you do not have the cap room until after June 1 when most the best UFA have already been signed.

I don’t think you can do the split between 25/26 right now. May need to wait til the start of the new league year in March to make that declaration. You can release the player in March/April but designate the player as a post June release.

A straight cut right now will make all of the $22 mill dead cap count in 2025.
Who knows whether Schoen is the GM who gets to make that decision or not. Or if someone else will be hired to make that call.

I hope they rip the bandaid off and take the full cap hit next year. That's what rebuilding is.
