Not to be dramatic, but that was one of the worst goaltending performances i’ve ever seen.

A few more notes:

1) I love that Svech tried that move on the breakaway early on. He forced a decent save out of Elliot, and even if he didn’t I wouldn’t ever want to discourage him from tried the unexpected like that.

2) If Gardiner hadn’t have scored, that missed boarding call on Foegele in the build up would have been the biggest flub of the year.

3) Outside of the our first 4-5 games to start the season and our trip out west, i’m not convinced by the hockey this team is playing. The loose and carefree stuff that leads to code red level breakdowns will end our season in late April at best.

Hopefully the return of Williams can get these guys to pull their heads out of their asses in time to buckle down and start playing the hard working and responsible brand of hockey that’s the backbone of this team’s success.

I will say that I was happy with what I saw in the 3rd period. The team allowed just 3 SOG with the lead for the majority. Save for that blown coverage, the skaters really locked it down. That's a step back in the right direction. This team isn't winning anything playing the loose brand of hockey we've seen since the return from the Western Canada trip.

Hamilton scores OT winner
by Michael Smith @MSmithCanes / CarolinaHurricanes.com
Dougie Hamilton scored his 14th goal of the season to propel the Carolina Hurricanes
to a 5-4 overtime win over the Philadelphia Flyers.
The Canes scored four straight goals to erase an early two-goal deficit, but the Flyers
forced overtime after tying the game late in the third.
It's big. We know how close the standings are," Hamilton said.
"We know how important these points are at this point in the season."
But, the Hurricanes are also cognizant of the fact that they need to be better.
"We've got to play better than we did, but those are big points," Hamilton said.
"We've got to really bear down and make sure we're playing better."
"We've got to get back to playing our identity," Warren Foegele said.
"That's playing fast and hard and making the right decisions at the right time."
It took the Flyers just 37 seconds to strike first, with All-Star Travis Konecny slipping one through James Reimer's blocker arm. About eight minutes later, the Canes failed to clear the zone, and Michael Raffl scored to make it a 2-0 game.
"It was a tough start, obviously. A couple of weird goals," head coach Rod Brind'Amour said. "I give the guys credit, though. Nobody on the bench were hanging their heads or anything. We were just talking about getting it back."
After the Canes rallied to score four in a row and take a two-goal lead, the Flyers got one back in the second period when Nicolas Aube-Kubel snuck a puck through Reimer. And, with 4:11 remaining in regulation, Travis Sanheim skated out from behind the net and into the slot before firing one five-hole to tie the game and force overtime.
"It was sloppy for us. You're going to get scored on, but you always want to make the other team really earn their goals. It didn't feel that way. A lot of turnovers and just kind of a little bit of sloppy coverage. It's not how we want it to be done," Brind'Amour said. "Not that we were bad tonight, but we need to be better, for sure."

let me have my "old man yells at cloud" moment and say that i didn't like the svechnikov breakaway because i hate fun. in seriousness, if the game was tied or we had a lead there's no problem with it for me. to call that move low percentage would be generous and we were down a goal. it only counts for one no matter how pretty it looks. it's good that he feels confident enough to try that and you don't want to take creativity out of his game, so you probably let it go if you're rba but you can't tell me he scores more consistently on that than he does picking a spot with his wrister or trying something less elaborate. he's probably feeling some pressure to be inventive after the buzz he generated for himself with the first two michigans, but let's go with something higher percentage.

on a positive note, lucas wallmark is generating some really important goals at times when a lot of the bench has been flat. he doesn't get enough credit for his engagement in every shift like mcginn and martinook because he's not as physical, but he has delivered a lot of goals that felt important for momentum purposes to get us back in games we weren't engaged in. he's been getting those greasy hard work goals. an ideal bottom six grinder that's basically an embodiment of what teams like boston are doing with their grind lines. high effort buzzsaw types as opposed to oafish bullies. pesky with their intensity and draw a lot of penalties from guys not trying to work as hard.

I don’t disagree with any of this. I also believe I saw that he was benched for a good portion of the 3rd. Probably mostly for his offensive zone penalty, though I wonder if the breakaway also played a part..

That being said, I wouldn’t want to make a big deal of it if I were RBA, because his creativity with the puck is part of the reason why Svech is as successful as he’s been this early in his career.

A few notes...
- I think Wallmark and Foegele still have more to give. They have random glimpses that more is there. Both of them have pretty nice snap shots in tight and always find the puck around the net.
-i can't point to a particular play but I feel like Pesces game hasn't been what we expect of him the last 15ish games.
- Edmunson.....why is he always pinching so damn deep in the ozond at the worst times? Especially when paired with Fleury leaving him in bad spots? He's supposed to be a steadying physical presence and he's acting like he's Mike Green.
- I still can't believe how fast Necas is. When he decides to backcheck he can really sneak up on a guy.
-while I don't think they've had bad games I see guys like Martinook, McGinn, and Staal pull up on a lot of hits that would be easy to make. Hard for me to stomach with how little sandpaper there are other places in the lineup.
-i liked rba benching Svech. Probably feels he's not going to be able to change Hamilton s penalty habits at this point but he's going to nip that shit in the bud with young laddie.

Agreed. I was shaking my fist at the TV.

I will say it was quite noticeable when Rod benched him in the 3rd. As soon as he came back out, he was making things happen, and almost scored. I'm pretty sure he's 25 years old, not 19.

To me it was low percentage because it has little chance of working straight at the goalie. It actually takes the angle away from you. It only really works when as a lefty you cut across left to right and drag the goalie with you then flick it back to the left post he’s moving away from.

It does seem a little over the top that he’s one by one pulling off everyone’s favorite 90’s moves, maybe because it’s suddenly coming with such frequency. He hasn’t scored enough “normal” goals to be so bored with them that he has to try the circus stuff. Mario and Jagr were the big guys at this stuff and there was a lot more space (and success) between the efforts.

it’s not making him more unpredictable, right now it’s making him inconsistent. Later on he had an easy backhand that looked like he completely missed the net on. Two breakaways and he forces a circus move on one then misses the net on a gimme backhand? Games on the line bruh. Playoffs and stuff. Focus.

Ps...I wonder if he listens to xm? Earlier in the day one of the guys listed his best goals of the year and he had Svech one and two in the top five, but Sonny Milano scoring the same exact move he tried last night was number one.

Agreed. I think most of the goals with that truck have happened exactly as mentioned. I'm not sure but I think at least William Karlsson did it like that couple seasons ago. In a breakaway from that angle it didn't add any value, he did it just for the show.

Doing the lacrosse move and other fancy tricks is good when they are unexpected and add some element of scoring (such as Svech now having the option of doing that from behind the net). Doing the tricks for the sake of YouTube views is not okay.
