yup. i don't think there are many operational benefits to having an ECHL affiliate at the NHL level (cleveland's affiliation is with kalamazoo) but it's weird to me that they don't affiliate themselves with the cincinnati cyclones just for the sake of optics + penetrating that market.

besides, it's not like cleveland to kalamazoo is any different of a drive than cleveland to cincy (both are 4 hours on the nose)
They get Cajan fronm Cincinnati when needed.

Edit: Not sure, but I don't think the Monsters are affiliated with an ECHL team. Looked it up and Hockeydb has our affiliation with Kalamazoo ending in 2023.

still, given how great the seattle music scene is, i do like that they pull so much from it in their game presentation

It was a great scene, but that ended when the tech boom pushed the artists out. It's an inescapable feeling in Seattle that the big money, which is where the arena and team come from, is in a different city that the music scene happened in.

  • the black keys
    • their sound is perfect for a hockey game (multiple NHL teams have used them as a goal song)
    • it's a b-side but "ohio" as a goal song would be more fun than "the whip" -- and would be our annoying version of nashville playing toby keith

I remember thinking that would make a great goal song.

sir, it is a swallowtail.

the logo is still the ohio flag, you just can't see the bottom corner of the swallowtail because it wraps around the star ;)

True, it is elegant in its own way. But your average person would have to look at it for a solid fifteen seconds to think of it as something other than stars and stripes, which is why it fails as a design. The first glance is all you'll ever get from most people. And we wonder why we are constantly called a generic meaningless franchise. The lack of wins is only part of that, in my opinion.

Unfortunately, the Plain Dealer barely provides minimum coverage of the Monsters and never mentions the Jackets.

death cab is still making music. and sunny day real estate is touring again (and sounds better than ever). so at least there's that.

I remember thinking that would make a great goal song.
people have been asking ohio state to play it instead of seven nation army for years and they did end up playing it at some games in a different spot.

maybe it's just not famous enough, but it's not like the whip was a huge hit either.

the cbj organizational identity seems disconnected from that – the team name itself is closer aligned to the state's history than the city's, the primary logo is the state flag, and the colors are traditional and aligned to the state flag in a city that is much less traditional than the state at large.
Remember when the Crew wore a heritage uniform that used the colors of the Columbus city flag and everyone despised it?

The colors black and gold are far more associated with the city of Pittsburgh than anything in Columbus but Crew fans ran with it to build their identity. Colors are just colors IMO.

We are the only NHL team in Ohio so in that regard we do represent the entire state but we still need another generation of kids growing up CBJ fans to finally weed out the Red Wings and Penguins fans that their parents and grandparents were when they moved to Columbus before the team ever existed.

The Plain Dealer is still around, but very small compared to what it was. Haven't read the paper in years, but do go on Cleveland.com, and they mention the Monsters here and there, but rarely the Jackets, if ever. They just did a story on the last Monsters game against Laval.

My grandson regularly confuses the American flag with the CBJ logo. Shouts “loooook, it’s CBJ!!!” Every time he sees Old Glory.
Granted, he’s 3, and we have never corrected him. 😊

It's Tim McGraw, and he sings alternate lyrics for it that specifically reference the Predators ("don't know what it is 'bout the Predators scorin'"). Incidentally, they follow that up with Gold On The Ceiling, by... The Black Keys.

That said, I like the idea overall of more locally associated acts. I'm sure we can make it happen; fan demand is why the cannon is a thing, after all.
