Flyers fire John Tortorella, name Brad Shaw interim head coach

  • We sincerely apologize for the extended downtime. Our hosting provider, XenForo Cloud, encountered a major issue with their backup system, which unfortunately resulted in the loss of some critical data from the past year.

Time to play Pelletier on a higher line, give Michkov more ice, recall Grebenkin, keep TK away from grinders.

10 game experience will be valuable.

Torts seems like a guy who has hit that stage in his life where he likes the idea of coaching but doesn't like the actual job of coaching.

To be fair to him, losing constantly takes its toil on pretty much anyone. Yes, he's partly to blame for those losses, but Philly's a terribly constructed team. He didn't exactly have a lot to work with. On the flipside, with the younger players Philly does have, namely Michkov, Torts is probably the worst type of coach to pair him with.

All in all, I think both sides are happy to part ways.

I guess those comments he made last game didn't sit well.
If your coach is not fully committed, he shouldn't be coaching,
I suspect he's just frustrated with coaching a rebuilding team. I think that Torts has shown in the past that he is a very good coach with a team that is ready to push to be its best, but coaching a team that is looking to develop its young talent isn't his strongest suit. Philly was always a strange fit for him that way. Hopefully the Flyers hire someone who is more adept at player development than Torts is.

I think he just hates coaching a team that doesn't have the pieces to push for the playoffs. It must be hard to coach a bad team, knowing that regardless of what he does, he doesn't have the players to get there. Especially for a competitive guy like Torts.

I wonder if he ends up hanging up the whistle at this stage in his career. He's earned it if he wants to.

Can't recall anyone. Used their last recall on Kolosov, who isn't even at practice this morning. Most likely because Torts demanded another goalie up because he (correctly) didn't trust Fedotov anymore.

Good reminder that even with Torts gone, Briere and Jones aren't exactly competent operators.

I thought he did a decent job in PHI, given what he had to work with. I don't like the way he tends to scapegoat the odd player, but many, many players mention that being coached by him helped their careers.

That's what I'm going to say if I ever have a life threatening surgery in the future.

"Get out you old dinosaur with 30 years of experience, I need the new guy to perform this surgery!"

A more apt analogy is do you want the old guy with the shaky hands using 1990s knowledge base when it comes to your surgery? Or the guy who’s using the latest technology and research?

“Why’d you cut his whole stomach open?? We do that arthroscopically now.”

The NHL game has passed Torts by. He despises creativity on offense. He admitted to not understanding modern offense when they hired him and that was like 3-4 years ago now.

He is also an insufferable prick and bully still. The shit he pulled on these players the last few years was so childish. Hell, they were on their way to making the Playoffs last year until his bad behavior reared its ugly head and gutted the players will to win.

Most Flyers fans feared he would be moving into a Front Office position when he was done coaching, so to see him leave the organization today is a massive relief. My only concern now is the Flyers winning a few extra games down the stretch and costing themselves a top 3 pick. That would be very on brand.

So was he fired or did he quit? I've read reports saying both.

"Relieved of his duties" in official nuance. That implies that it was involuntary, even if his statement of the other day implied that he didn't really want the job anymore. That means he's not allowed to coach the team, but is still under contract and on the Flyers' payroll.
