New Jersey selects winger Kenta Isogai from the WHL’s Wenatchee Wild

1717809487275.jpeg

He is a small child (5’11” 154) but a skilled child with a 30 goal season and 88 points following up 3 years in the USHL. He’s also all the way out of Japan with some time spent in Austria, so he’s a well-traveled child.

Gary Bettman: Carolina, please make your way to the stage to make your next selection.

At Carolina's draft table, a still shaking Eric Tulsky pokes Rod Brind'Amour in the side. It takes a few prods for Rod to even feel them through his rippling muscles, but he finally Tulsky gets his attention and nods at Rod to take the stage.

Up at the podium, Rod begins to make Carolina's next selection.

RB: Hey everyone! You guys all might know me as Rod Brind'Amour - but you also might know as "Rod the Bod"!
*He flexes like bodybuilder on stage a few times.*

RB continues: I'm up here to make Carolina's next selection, but before I do there are just a few things I want to say... See, some people might ask, 'Rod the Bod, what do you even look for in a player when your team is drafting?' Well, I'm gonna tell you... But in order to understand that, let's explore a little bit about what got me to this point... See, I was born in Ottawa, but was primarily raised out in BC, moving from Prince Rupert to Campbell River to Wilcox, SK. And moving a lot can be pretty tough on a kid. But, me, Rod the Bod, I am tough, I am resilient, and I found my solace in the weight room! Hell yeah!!!

*He flexes again*

RB continues: I'd work out all the time! Right after waking up, on lunch break, after school, after dinner, before bed. It's why they call me Rod the Bod. When I was with the Spartans - they're in Michigan - my workouts were so intense, that head coach Ron Mason [*he kisses his hand and points to the sky*] would turn the lights out on me to get me to stop, and when that didn't work he'd padlock the weight room!

10 minutes of this pass.
Then 20. 30.
...
Two hours later and Brind'Amour is still at the podium, now inexplicably topless, glistening with a sheen of sweat.

RB: And so, that's why, after my first year Rod the Bod decided to leave Michigan and join the pro league! Which brings me to my time with St. Louis...

In the crowd, Don Waddell finally rolls his eyes and stands up.
Climbing on to the stage, Don unplugs the microphone and grabs the podium from in front of Brind'Amour and patiently carries it as far to the side of the stage as he can. He then returns and grabs Brind'Amour under the armpits and carries him to the side of the stage too. Brind'Amour remains unfazed through all of this, continuing to prattle on as if unaware anything's changed.

Slightly out of breath now, Waddell grabs a new mic from a PA.

DW: Um... yeah, I guess Carolina selects.... Jack Pridham

Scott Niedermayer: Well, these energy drinks are all empties now and I think I saw Pat grabbing his car keys after that Swanson pick. Guess that means it's my time to shine!

Okay, we've had enough Oompa Loompa picks. Seriously, Swanson? I've got pubes taller than that kid.

Let's put some size into this prospect pool. Yeah, his season didn't start great but he was coming out of the BCHL. We'll cut the kid some slack - looks like he started putting it together in the second half and this is our last pick anyway.

With the 164th pick, Anaheim makes its final selection. From Kelowna of the WHL, we choose Hiroki Gojsic.

Gary Bettman: Carolina, I understand you're sending up your captain for this pick? Just come up and make it happen quickly, please...

Carolina Captain Jordan Staal storms the stage, pumping up the crowd.

JS: Alright, guuuys, let's gooo! Thanks Vegas for having us here at the Circle-thing, bro! Just let me get my paper out here...

Staal pulls out a very crumpled piece of paper from his back pocket.

JS: The Carolina Hurricanes are pleased to select...

He trails off.
Pauses. And looks up and down a couple of times.
He squints in the crowd.

JS: Hey, Donny?

Don Waddell hesitantly shouts from the back of the crowd.

DW: ... (!)Yeah Staalsy?(!)

JS: Are there any more Staal brothers we can draft instead?

DW: (!)N-No, Jordan. You don't have anymore brothers... Jared was the last one.(!)

JS: Who???

DW: (!)Yeah... nobody ever remembers him..!(!)

JS: So, like, who do I draft, then?

DW: (!)Just say whatever name is on the paper, Jordan.(!)

JS: Oookayyy, dude. Like, whatever... Carolina selects Jonathan Morello, or something. I dunno.

He tosses the paper on the ground and slumps off.
